(Celia) Elizabeth Price died on Dec. 28, 2011, at Willamette View where she lived for the final 11 months of her life. She was born in Rockford IL, on November 28, 1914, to Leon and Gladys (Goddard) Squier. The family lived in Rockford and Chicago before moving to Portland where she attended Lincoln High School as a freshman. She completed high school in Seattle at Roosevelt near her father’s osteopathic practice. After her father was killed in 1934, the family moved back to Portland.
She worked for E.A. Pierce, later to merge with Merrill Lynch. In 1943 she went to work for June S. Jones Co. When she retired in 1973 she was Secretary Treasurer of the brokerage firm. She joined First Presbyterian Church in 1935 and was active in the young adult groups, especially the outings to Camp Hollyburn near Estacada. During those years she developed life-long friendships and met her future husband, Trevor Price. They married in 1941.
Together they built their home on Bull Mountain where she graciously entertained family and friends, enjoying a social life with Trev’s colleagues in the U.S. Corps of Engineers. The hundreds of dozens of cookies she baked each Christmas were a welcomed tradition for her family and friends. She gardened, loved animals and nature and was a good sport during out door activities. Late in life she continued to walk (and eat) with the “Happy Hikers.” She made many trips to Europe and took a number of cruises. After all her trips she would recount in detail the meals she had eaten.
When care for her home became a burden, she sold the adjoining property to the City of Tigard, which is now the Elizabeth Price Park. On subsequent visits to her former home she delighted in seeing young families at play in “my park.” She enjoyed carefree living for 11 years at Courtyard Village in Raleigh Hills with both long-time and new friends.
Elizabeth was a doting wife, aunt and sister, generous and slightly indulgent. “Sweet” was the word many acquaintances used to describe her. She kept copious notes of her daily activities and detailed records of home maintenance and purchases. She had a zest for living life enthusiastically. She loved ballet, musicals, theater and the symphony.
She is survived by her brother, Lee Goddard Squier (Janet) and nieces and nephews: Rebecca Knudeson (Kim), Tigard; Cornelia Schadler (Cliff), Sequim, WA; Roger Squier (Margot), Orinda, CA; Kirk Squier, Ketchum, ID; Gary Squier (Anita), Santa Monica, CA; and Jonathan Squier, Portland; along with 8 great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband and her brother, George K. (Cap) Squier.
She supported her church, Menucha, the Nature Conservancy, the Humane Society, the Art Museum and Oregon Symphony among many other organizations and causes.
Her family is grateful for the competent and compassionate care she received while in residence at Willamette.
Remembrances may be contributed to First Presbyterian Church or a charity of your choice. A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, Portland, on January 29, 2012.
