Elizabeth "Betty" K. Sokol, a woman whose warmth and gentle spirit touched everyone she met, passed away peacefully on May 19, 2026, in Portland, Oregon. She was 98 years old.
Betty was born on January 31, 1928, in Lefor, North Dakota, and made Portland her home for most of her life. As a homemaker, she poured her heart into caring for those around her — a role she embraced with quiet grace and unwavering dedication.
Her faith was the steady compass of her life. A devout Catholic, Betty's relationship with her church was lifelong and deep, a source of both strength and community that sustained her through every season of life.
Betty had a generous spirit that extended far beyond her own doorstep. She volunteered faithfully with the Red Cross and other organizations, giving her time and energy to causes greater than herself — never seeking recognition, simply showing up to help.
Those who knew Betty knew her smile and her quiet laugh — warm and genuine, offered freely to anyone lucky enough to be in her company. She had a gift for making people feel at ease, and a card table was her natural element — especially when pinochle was the game. She played with enthusiasm and no small amount of skill.
Above all, Betty was humble. Hers was a life lived in quiet service, genuine kindness, and deep love for family and neighbor alike.
She is survived by her son, Michael; her niece, Mary; her nephew, Gary; and a wide circle of beloved cousins.
A funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, May 28, 2026, at St. Clare's Church in southwest Portland.
