I don't have any great stories to tell about grandma, just some of my favorite memories and things I loved about her. Grandma always did special things for Jen and I that have meant so much to me. I feel like she treated us like we were princesses. She always read books to us at bedtime. She would put powder all over us after our bath time. She made us blue milk (blue food coloring in the milk.) She always had crafts for us to do when we would visit. She and (I think grandpa helped) make these special card holders to hold the cards for when we played UNO because our hands were too small to hold all of the cards we would get (they looked similar to scrabble holders.) She made us ponchos out of black garbage bags so we wouldn't get soaked in the rain when we walked the dog with her. She always let Jen and I take turns sitting on the center arm rest in the car so we could see out the window better. One time she grated cheddar cheese, rolled it into tiny balls and put the balls on top of Bugles chips so they would look like mini ice cream cones. She took us to the zoo often as well as her and grandpa would take us to the beach and camping. I did go camping with grandma on her first camping trip after grandpa passed, we slept in a tent and she said, I will never do that again. Soon after, she got her motorhome so she could camp in style like her and grandpa did with the 5th wheel. This may seem strange to some folks but I always admired how organized and ingenious she was. Grandma was a very smart and realistic woman and she had an amazing memory, she would tell me fun stories from when her kids were little. Everything she did for us was just so special and made us feel so loved, she really was the best grandma anyone could ever ask for!! As my dad would say, she was the kind.

Harriet Leona (Fischer) Hogg

I can only repeat what everyone knows… Harriet was the light, the fun, the friend wherever she was. Always the person in the groups everyone liked, admired, and enjoyed. It has been my special privilege to have known her since we first met seventy two and a half years ago in freshman class at Tigard High. I can truly say I loved her and will continue to do so. I extend sincerely sympathy to all in our loss. 

Harriet’s family was her world. As her first born Steve carried the burden of introducing both pride and agony. Her pride as he excelled in his student years and the pain as he suffered his cancer battle. Steve was the baby in the stroller being pushed from the senior Hogg’s home on Capitol Highway to the house on SW Clinton that his mother and Dad were building. Later, Kathy joined them after enduring being confined to her crib with casts on both legs. The family was at our home the night Kathy lay on our couch, not feeling well enough to join the others of our combined teens and pre-teens. Later, at home that night, the pain developed into appendicitis. Glen was a son of trial and tribulation. She had both declared early that boys born in June and July of 1952 had been subjected to some planetary alignment mix-up. But her ultimate test of motherhood was with his untimely death. She desired credit to daughter-in-law Becky in helping her through it all. Marilyn’s birth was nearly a tragedy with the very real threat of losing both baby and mother. They survived with a special bond. Harriet was so proud of her, her husband and their children. Though no less all the children, their children, and on. All were her “pride and joy.” 

No husband-wife relationship could have been stronger than with Harriet and Bob. His appearance on the scene came to everyone’s attention the night he and his Lincoln High buddy followed by car behind our Tigard student “outing” hay ride through Tualatin. It was hilarious to see the fellows intimidated by those imposing “foreigners!” Lincoln High won. Harriet and her friend Marion married those two after high school. Harriet and Bob had a long, happy, successful marriage.

Harriet’s precious sense of humor plus her complete care and devotion for her parents is so obvious in my favorite ‘Harriet story’…she was helping her 90+ father with bathtime – Mr. Fischer asked her, “Do I know you?” “Who are you?” Harriet patiently told him that she was his daughter, Harriet. And he asked, “Do I have any others?” She replied, “Not yet, Dad!” That made him laugh so much his memory returned for a few sweet moments as they laughed together. Causing laughter was one of her greatest attributes.

We shall all sincerely miss her.

I remember blue milk, and playing the Memory game and Uno with her. Doing crafts and helping make dinner for grandpa, walking Gretchen, and Chief later. Teasing Great Grandma Fisher about eating Tuna Noodle Casserole made with shell pasta and calling it slugs. Multiple trips to the zoo, camping in the camper van with her before Grandpa retired and they got the 5th wheel. Grandma reading to Lisa and I every night when we stayed over. Singing silly nursery rhymes or children's songs. Awesome trips to Cannon Beach, where we would stay in a beach cabin, go to the tide pools and always look for silver dollars and pretty shells on the beach. I plant Impatiens in my planter box every year because Grandma always had those and Geraniums planted and they remind me of her. Anyways, it seemed so odd to me that I couldn't come up with anything that I felt was good enough to pass along. Then I realized it's because it was no one thing that was special to me, it was EVERYTHING. She was amazing. She always made me feel important. Like whatever thoughts you had or whatever you might be doing or whatever you were talking about were a priority to her. There is no one else I know like her. It's the way she made you feel, not necessarily a specific time or occurrence; it was everything, every time. She made me feel special. She has given me inspiration to be to my grandkids what she was and still is to me. I want them to feel about me, the way I feel about her; loved and special. I want them to grow up feeling the love and warmth and acceptance that I have always felt from her. And to have memories that are happy and make them feel good just thinking back on them. She was definitely one of a kind.

I wanted to talk about the crisp $5 bills we would always receive on EVERY holiday with a hand written note from Grandma sending her love. After I reached the age of 21 my time came to an end of receiving the bills and holiday cards as that was the year that she no longer sent them out. It wasn't until I had Nolan that I was able to enjoy the $5 bill and card tradition again, and then subsequently Mira. How special Grandma was that her strong connection with family continued with her great-grandchildren. I remember sitting with Grandma once upon a time and the subject of the $5 bills came up. I asked her, "How is it that you manage to always have the crispest bills to send out?" She told me that at the beginning of each year she would add up how many bills she needs depending on her growing brood, goes into the bank and orders in the freshest bills that she could get her hands on. Every year, for 21 years at every holiday occurrence, times 9 grandchildren, times 8 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. This act was just one of the many ways Grandma's love showed up through the years. I will miss seeing those little cards in the mail.

I think the story about ye olde brick trick and its recent return on Gma's 80th is a great tale. I can still see the foil wrapped brick in its normal resting place next to the basement stair of the tigard house. The way she enjoyed it being gifted back to her will always be one of my favorite memories. Another endearing thing was how she always was ready for the entire family to descend upon her home and how warm it always felt, how there seemed to be room for everyone, and the plentiful provisions for the grandkids (capri suns and sodas in the basement fridge.)

Every time I had the chance to see Harriet she was always so full of laughter and love for her family. If I have even half the adventurousness she had I will count myself lucky!

Harriet was always light hearted and care free and adventures. She was caring and friendly and always there with her witt. She will be missed greatly.
