Jerry's journey began in Portland where he grew up before leaving high school after his junior year to join the US Army in 1956. During his six years of service, Jerry earned his GED through the Army and developed a strong work ethic that would define his life. After completing his military service in 1962, Jerry pursued further education at OTI (Oregon Technical Institute) in Klamath Falls. It was during this time that he met Patricia, who would later become his beloved wife.
A skilled auto body mechanic, with a passion for his craft, Jerry dedicated over 5 decades to the industry. He opened his first shop, Jerry's Auto Body, in Southeast Portland and later during the mid 1970's, he moved to Clackamas and founded Sunnyside Auto Body. His commitment to excellence and hard work earned him respect within the community and among those who knew him.
Jerry's life was enriched by a wide array of hobbies and interests that reflected his adventurous spirit and zest for life. Over the years he enjoyed building cars, playing handball, racquet ball and skiing. He took up the banjo and mandolin so he could play bluegrass. He camped and hiked with his family, rode motorcycles and snowmobiles and started ballroom dancing with Patricia. He also enjoyed daily bike rides through the neighborhood (until he fell and broke his hip),and driving his sand rail across the Oregon and California Dunes. His enthusiasm for these activities brought joy to both himself and those around him.
Family was central to Jerry's life. He is survived by Patricia; his older brother Jack Nuszbaum; his four children: Charlotte Crowley, Angela St. John, Devin Nuszbaum and Monica Gordon, as well as six grandchildren; Derek Mountain, Calvin Mountain, Eva Mountain, Olivia Rodriguez and Bernadette Worthey; and three great-grandchildren; Chloe Rodriguez, Levi Rodriguez and Milo Walker-Mountain. He was pre-deceased by his parents; Orpha Haworth and Henry Nuszbaum.
Jerry's legacy is one of hard work, resilience, love for adventure and devotion to family. His memory will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
May Jerry's memory bring comfort to those who loved him, as they celebrate a life well-lived. A funeral mass will be held on May 7, 2026 from 10:00am to 11:00am at Holy Rosary Church 375 NE Clackamas Street, Portland, Oregon 97232. For those who wish to attend, there will be a rosary preceding the ceremony at 9:30am. There will be a reception following in the church hall. The Burial will be at 2:30pm on the same day at Willamette National Cemetery 11800 SE Mt. Scott Boulevard, Happy Valley, Oregon 97086.
