Julius married Rose Mary Johannes in 1939; Rose passed away in 2003. During WWII, they moved to Cleveland where he worked in the Aircraft Division of Eaton Mfg. In 1950, they moved to Oregon (Tualatin, then Metzger) when Julius found employment with the Blaesing Granite Company where he worked until his retirement. A great memory of his career is the lettering of the names on the Korean War Memorial at the Portland Memorial Coliseum. Julius operated his own memorial lettering business doing final inscriptions at cemeteries throughout the Pacific Northwest.
Julius had a love for many activities from childhood to adulthood – church, fishing, baseball (Rockville amateur league), basketball (Cold Spring Brewers), bowling with the Knights of Columbus, coaching CYO basketball at St. Anthony Catholic School, golf for pleasure in later years and also attended Jesuit High School football games long after his boys had graduated. He and Rose both loved vegetable, fruit and flower gardening in their big yard. He sang in choir for many years. He also taught himself piano and thoroughly enjoyed his Conn organ right up into his last year. As a drawer of designs for monuments, he held an interest in art and enjoyed painting water fowl and landscapes in oil during his retirement. After Julius left his Metzger home, he resided at the Edgewood Downs Retirement Center in Beaverton for 7 years and played pool weekly, pinochle almost daily and was the catcher for their bean bag baseball team. He loved his activities and friendships there.
Julius’ family would like to give heartfelt thanks to Elisabeta, Amalia and all the staff at Cascade Adult Care Home in Beaverton for their kind and loving care of our father at the end of his life.
He is survived by his sister Louise Meinz Rausch of MN; children Marcia Kay Meinz, Jen Rose Fagan, Vernon Meinz, Loren Meinz, Dick Meinz, and Melody Cleary; son Robert predeceased him; 9 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
Julius & Rosemary were long-time members of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Tigard. There will be a graveside service at St. Anthony Cemetery at 11585 SW Gaarde Rd in Tigard on Wed., April 13th at 1:00 pm. Friends of Julius are welcome to attend.
