Bernie passed peacefully with his children at his side on July 25, 2020 at the age of 89 years old. We will never forget the many life lessons Bernie taught us; he taught us to be hard working responsible adults and always keep your word. Bernie was born May 29, 1931 in Tigard to Albert and Gertrude Ochs Scheckla. As the youngest of eleven children, he grew up on the family farm in Tigard where his parents raised garlic and strawberries. He attended St. Anthony grade school then graduated from Tigard High School in 1949. Bernie developed his green thumb early on, winning many a Blue Ribbon at county and state fairs for his chrysanthemums. In the early 50s, he served in the Army National Guard in California and Oregon as a medic. He drove logging trucks for his brother Jim's company, throughout Oregon and California. He married Geraldine Lee Stewart of Beaverton in November 1954. From a friend, he secured a job working with the Ironworkers on the Marcuam I-5 bridge in Portland OR which resulted in an accident that opened the door to begin Bernie's Nursery & Landscaping. Bernie truly loved the outdoors. Bernie took pride in teaching his outdoor skills to his sons, nephews, and friends.. His love of flora and fauna led to the founding of Bernie’s Nursery and Landscaping which allowed for him to engage in his Fall hunting trips which were meticulously planned for months in advance (stories that are infamous and talk of to this day!) After 30 years in Beaverton and selling his business to his sons, Bernie and Jerri retired to 20 acres in Donald, OR where their annual August family reunions were legendary. Bernie and Jerri were married 51 years when Jerri preceded Bernie in death in 2005. In his later years he enjoyed spending time at his home in Salishan, watching wildlife on trips in his RV, and winning a jackpot or two at the casino. He is survived by four children, daughter Janet Petersen and husband Paul of Wilsonville, son Alex Scheckla of Newberg, son Roddy Scheckla of Newberg and daughter Jill Houston and husband Don of Wilsonville. Bernie also leaves behind 7 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
