Lura Dell Callaghan (Hall) was born on April 30, 1928 in Wolf Point, Montana. She graduated from the University of Montana and then went on to attend the University of Portland and graduated with her Master’s degree. She met John Milne Callaghan at the University of Portland and they got married. She taught home economics at Cottage Grove while Jack finished at the University of Oregon. On weekends, they also ran the Barlow Trail Restaurant and Bar in Rhododendron, Oregon. As well as both running the restaurant, they also tended the bar.
They spent most of their teaching careers in Sandy, Oregon and Mt. Hood. She specialized in special education, designing programs, writing grants and was included in the who’s who of American teachers. They both loved the outdoors and living on the mountain. They loved living in their huge Steiner house on 9 acres. Lura Dell loved animals and could train anything, including their pet raccoon and her childhood pet chicken. All her animals had impeccable manners. She also loved flowers, cooking, sewing, decorating and making furniture.
Lura Dell passed away on August 12, 2018 in Wilsonville, Oregon and is survived by her sister-in-law, Helen Clark, nieces, Kathleen and Leslie Clark and nephew, Stuart Clark.
