Lyle Mark McKinstry
November 24, 1926 – July 29, 2019
Lyle Mark McKinstry died Monday July 29, 2019 of natural causes at Tanner Spring Assisted Living in West Linn. He was 92. Lyle was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. His parents both grew up in homesteader cabins in South Dakota and then came to Portland in the 1930’s. He completed his GED at Benson High School after serving in the Merchant Marine in WWII where he saw action in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. He followed his father into the Fire Department then transferred to the Portland Police Department where he served for 35 years. He was a compassionate and effective police officer and never needed to fire his weapon in the line of duty. To support his growing family he also worked as a general contractor, putting in 16 hour days for years. He was mechanically gifted and could and did build or repair anything, tripling the size of our family’s home to accommodate four active sons.
Lyle will be remembered as a gentle, positive, and generous individual. He was always devoted to and appreciative of his family, teaching us all so well by his example to accept and love everyone. All who worked with him in his older years commented on his “sweet” temperament. He was a faithful member of the Greatest Generation of All Time and will be sorely missed as the longtime head of, and role model for, our family.
