Lynne was born in Glasgow, Scotland on April 15, 1954, to Margaret Lowrie-Kelly and the late Joseph Holmes Kelly. She resided in Castlemilk until age 9 when, along with her mother and two brothers, moved to join her father in 1963 who had immigrated to America, settling in Portland, Oregon. Over time, the Kelly family moved to Lake Oswego, Oregon, allowing Lynne to begin her new life as a freshman at Waluga Junior High School. In the following years, Lynne eventually was in the first graduating class of Lakeridge High School in 1972 where she was a “Pacer” cheerleader.
Lynne loved the beach, snow skiing, gardening and travel, especially the visits back home to see her relatives in Scotland & Ireland. In 1974, Washington Square sponsored a “Double-Decker London” bus as part of their Grand Opening with Lynne as their hostess transporting shoppers around the mall. Lynne was also one of the first people hired at Salty’s on the Willamette.
Her stunning beauty and glowing heart began opening doors, modeling locally but more importantly making many friends that have lasted a lifetime. In the late '70's she was hired as an Eastern Airlines flight attendant based in NYC, resigning in 1984. During that time, she met and later married her husband, “JB”. Together they resided in the Westlake community in the city of Lake Oswego for over 40 years. Lynne cherished her neighborhood walks with five of her best furry friends, all of whom were her favorites.
She loved to catch up with many during her daily walks, leaving a lasting impact on everyone she met. Lynne was a loyal friend to those close to her and they could always count on her love and support. As a longtime member of the Portland Flower Market, Lynne developed a knack and talent for floral arranging. She was a walking encyclopedia and could identify any flower. She always kept an array of flowers inside her home and the window boxes in front were spectacular. Lynne loved to decorate especially during the holidays and was a wonderful cook.
Through the years, Lynne and “JB” developed a special bond with the Westlake Fire Station; local 210 training facility located a few blocks from their home. Lynne understood the importance of family and the feeling of missing them during the holidays. Thus ensued a tradition… every year, Lynne made it her mission to deliver a holiday dinner with all the trimmings to their firefighter friends. It was always a delight for Lynne to hear the silver bell ring each time the fire trucks drove by her home.
“Every time a bell rings, an angel earns their wings”…you have earned your wings Lynne, our sweet angel.
Lynne is survived by her husband, John Barrett Self, Jr and her beloved goldendoodle "Ollie", her “Mum”, Margaret Kelly of Tigard and her two brothers; Stephen Kelly and Mark (Holly) Kelly of the Portland area, nephews; Torrin Kelly and Brennan Kelly; her Aunt Becky Lowrie of Tigard. Lynne also has extended family in the Carolinas, Scotland, Ireland, Canada and South Africa. She stayed in touch no matter the distance.
A very special thank you to all those who took exceptional care of Lynne especially to the wonderful caring staff at Legacy Meridian Park including Short Stay, and the wonderful team of nurses at our final stop, 3A as well as the tender loving care and support from Bridgeport Family Medicine. Also, her lifelong friend Louise Avery, whose caring and unwavering devotion will never be forgotten.
