She was born in Portland, Oregon, the second child and youngest daughter of Fred and Hazel Stricker. Life was good for the Stricker family during the early years of her life. Her father was a farmer and road construction contractor. The family lived in Multnomah Village and the Glencullen neighborhood of southwest Portland near shirttail relatives who were landowners and dairy farmers.
Mae went to elementary school in Beaverton and attended Lincoln High School. She met Joe Sabel her during her junior year at Lincoln, and was completely smitten with him. They married in 1937 and were together until Joe died in 1995.
Mae and Joe lived in Beaverton for fifty years. They moved to Summerfield (Tigard, OR) in 1985, where they played golf regularly and enjoyed the social community. They made many lifelong friends at Summerfield.
For many years Mae and Joe traded Oregon’s rainy winters for the southern California sun, becoming snowbirds in El Cahon, California.
Mae was an extraordinary homemaker and devoted mother to her son, Rich. She was an accomplished seamstress, a talented artist and craftsperson, a good cook and diligent gardener. She loved homemaking and parenting, but golf was her passion. She excelled at the sport and achieved the rare accomplishment of hitting a hole-in-one in 1991. She played the game until she was 80 years old.
She is survived by her beloved son, Rich and his wife, Kathleen, grandson, Todd Sabel (Sautee, GA), nephew Jerry Patton and his wife, Betty (Auburn, CA), and numerous great nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, July 27th in the Maryville chapel, 14645 SW Farmington Road, Beaverton, OR 97007. A reception will follow in the Shalom Center at Maryville. Additional parking is available along SW 148th Avenue. Private interment will be Monday, July 29th at Mount Calvary Cemetery.
The family is grateful to the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon and the nursing staff at Maryville for the beautiful and loving care they gave Mae the last years of her life. We would be honored if you choose to remember Mae with a contribution to the SSMO Foundation.
