Marilee Kathryn Goodwin passed away peacefully on Nov. 15 with loving family by her side. Born in Ellensburg, Washington, Marilee eventually moved with her family to LaGrande, Oregon. She attended LaGrande High School where she was active in multiple clubs, choir, and student government. She loved to swim and was a member of the LaGrande High water ballet team and spent summers as a lifeguard at the community pool.
Marilee married her high school sweetheart Fred Raymond Goodwin on Dec. 25, 1960, and not long afterward, the newlyweds moved to Stuttgart, Germany, where Fred was stationed in the Army. Marilee worked for Army intelligence in Germany, and she and Fred enjoyed making a home in Stuttgart and travelling to other parts of Europe in their free time.
Once back in the states, Marilee earned her teaching degree at Eastern Oregon College (EOU). Early in her career she taught at elementary schools in LaGrande, Klamath Falls, and Newport. Fred and Marilee eventually moved to Lake Oswego, where they raised their two children. Marilee earned a Master’s Degree in Education from Lewis & Clark College and spent the remainder of her career teaching first grade at Forest Hills Elementary. Marilee enjoyed membership in PEO and attended meetings and events regularly with her beloved sister Joyce.
Marilee enjoyed trips to Hawaii with loved ones and cherished spending time at the Oregon Coast and Black Butte Ranch, where the family made many special memories. Family celebrations were made more special by her beautifully decorated tables and, for birthdays, her delicious and unique raisin cream pie. Marilee always had a book by her side and cherished time with her book club friends. She also loved spending time with her grandchildren, with whom she put all those years of elementary school teaching to good use.
Marilee is survived by her husband of 63 years, Fred; her children, Stacy Goodwin and Matt Goodwin; her daughter-in-law, Suzanne Stevens; and her grandchildren, Cassidy, 16, and Hunter, 12.
A celebration of Marilee’s life will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, December 16th at Mountain Park Church in Lake Oswego (40 McNary Pkwy, Lake Oswego, OR 97035). Remembrances in Marilee’s name can be made to SMART Reading – smartreading.org
