Mary was born on March 25, 1927 to Paul and Leona (Marsh) Hopkins in Davenport, Iowa. She was raised in Rockport, Missouri on the family farm, where much corn was harvested. Mary had a vision that one day she would move out west and find a husband, her vision came to fruition in 1942 when she and her family relocated to Hubbard, Oregon where her father found work at the Portland shipyards. One day she met the love of her life, Frank Peters who had moved from Montana. 3 days before her 18th birthday Frank and Mary were united in marriage. They were happily married for 68 years.
The newlywed couple moved to SE Portland and welcomed two children; Deanna on November 11, 1946 and Kriss on July 31, 1950. A short time as a family they moved across the river to SW Portland. Mary had an amazing love for her children. She was never one to miss a child’s birthday party, graduation or any special occasion. When Mary became a grandmother this love continued, always in attendance at her grandchildren’s events. Family was always her priority and she loved to be surrounded with her children and grandchildren. Even when she was not physically around them, she had photos all around the home to remind her of the most precious people in her life.
Mary was generous, strong, loving and kind. She enjoyed gardening, traveling, and spending time with her family. Mary’s cooking and baking was enjoyed by all. As a little boy, Kriss once told his mother after an excellent meal, “Mom, you are a good cooker”. Of all her dishes apple pie and spaghetti were noted favorites, later on in life she passed down her spaghetti recipe to Deanna.
Mary was an expert seamstress making many items, even her families clothing. Besides being a wonderful wife, mother, cook, seamstress, and gardener, Mary kept an immaculate home. She was very meticulous, well organized and when invited into her home, you always felt a warm welcome.
Once the kids were grown Mary & Frank took vacations to the Oregon Coast, Hawaii, Florida, east coast road trip, and perhaps the most memorable was the trip they took back to Missouri with Mary’s father, Paul. They were able to trace the family roots during that trip, and Mary who was very close with her father, built an even deeper appreciation for family.
Faith was very important to Mary, she attended Woodstock Church of God, were she and Frank both sang in the choir, and later on they both attended Tigard Church of God.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her loving husband, Frank Peters, her children; Deanna Rigelman (Max) and Kriss Peters (Janet), grandchildren; Heather, Kimberly, Frank, Holly, and 9 great grandchildren.
Memorial Contributions may be made in Mary’s name to a charity of choice.
