Norm is survived by his children Jill Nagel Bassitt of Hillsboro, Oregon and Joan Nagel Shingledecker of Beaverton, Oregon. He is preceded in death by his wife Lois Bernard Nagel.
Norm was born on June 13, 1923, in Portland, Oregon to Samuel Nagel and Minnie Pearl Nagel. He attended Oregon State University before graduating from the University of Portland. He served in WWII in the branch of the United States Army. He married Lois Bernard whom he met on a blind date in college. He worked for the United States Postal Service prior to a long-time tenure as an Auditing Accountant for Bonneville Power Administration from where he retired at the age of 57. He and Lois had a wonderful time during their retirement enjoying cruises and camping with all of their many friends. When they weren’t out travelling, they were often helping out with their five grandchildren. Norm was fortunate to also spend time with his nine great grandchildren who brought great joy to him.
His children and grandchildren remember him as a generous, kind and gentle man who often added humor to everyone’s lives.
Norm was the kind of man who could fix just about anything around the house. He remodeled kitchens, built bedrooms, and was great at any home project. His favorite project was repairing the ceramic seagull he and Lois had in their backyard. His wings never seemed to want to stay on, but Norm never gave up on that seagull.
He, Lois and their friends always enjoyed their five o’clock hour prior to their group dinners. Many card games were enjoyed as well.
At 99 years old, Norm outlived every one of his friends. We know they are all in Heaven enjoying a drink and conversation and maybe even a game of pinnacle.
A military graveside service for family is scheduled for January 23, 2023, at 12:30 p.m. at Willamette National Cemetery.
Condolences can be sent to [email protected]. The family would like to thank his caregivers at The Springs at Tanasbourne and Tenderly Hospice for their care.
