Peal Edna was born in Shadybrook, Oregon on September 6, 1910. Her parents were Elmer L. Miller (1883-1955) and Ethel Nettie (Dix) Miller (1891-1976). On her mother’s side of her family she was a descendant of Oregon pioneers that came to Oregon in 1854, with her grandmother being born along the Oregon Trail in Wyoming.
Most of her childhood was growing up in the North Plains area. She moved to Forest Grove for a couple of years to live with her grandparents to start high school. She moved back to North Plains when she was old enough to drive to Hillsboro High School where she graduated. She then went to Oregon Normal School (now Western Oregon University) in Monmouth to receive her teaching degree.
She taught school at Gladstone School District #78, Strassel in the foothills of the coast range West of Forest Grove until her marriage to Victor Christensen on February 27, 1931 in North Plains. She then moved to her husband’s family homestead on Mason Hill north of Hillsboro and partnered with him in the dairy farming business. She had two children, a daughter Virginia and a son who died at birth. Virginia now lives in Gaston, Oregon.
They moved their dairy farm in 1945 to the south side of Tualatin. Now that she was closer to a town she started being more involved in the community. Pearl joined the Winona Grange in 1947 and was a very active member. She held several different offices over the years at both the local grange and also the county. She was chairman of the women’s activities committee for several years and really enjoyed all the crafty projects they did.
She was a longtime member of Norwood Bible Church in Tualatin. She loved teaching 1st grade Sunday school and was also the secretary for some time. She looked forward to helping with vacation bible school also.
For over 40 years she volunteered as Superintendent of the land products displays at the Washington County Fair in Hillsboro each summer.
She was on the committee to build a senior center in Tualatin. After the building was completed she went weekly to assist in serving food.
Her other special interests were sewing, crocheting, needlework and gardening.
Vic passed away in January 1991. He and Pearl had been married for almost 60 years. She passed away on October 17, 2010 at Avamere in Newberg, Oregon. Her brothers, Oscar, Oren, Clarence, Norman and Sisters Ruth and Della preceded her in death. She is survived by a sister Doris, her daughter Virginia, her grandchildren Beverly Hall, Helen Herrold, Bill Herrold, George Herrold, her great grandchildren Stephanie Brown, Daniel Hall, Tracy Hall, Benjamin Herrold and her great great grandson Dakota Poehler.
