Ray attended Jefferson High School in Portland, Oregon, and gallantly served his country during World War II in the Navy as a Chief Aviation Mechanic on multiple aircraft carriers under fire in the Pacific. After the War, he was employed by Pacific Northwest Bell working his way up from linesman and finally into management during his 37 years of employment. During his time as a linesman, he volunteered to help fight the massive Tillamook Burn fire.
While on assignment for the phone company, Ray met and fell in love with Estelle Johnson, a native from Texas, in Grants Pass, Oregon, and they married on October 18, 1947. Ray and Estelle celebrated their joyous 50th wedding anniversary shortly before Estelle sadly passed away in April, 1998.
Ray was an avid golfer, adventuresome outdoors man, camper, devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He spent numerous hours with his family, including watching his grandchildren play in endless basketball, baseball, and softball games, and participate in frequent dance and musical performances. He was a member of the King City Golf Men’s Association for years, and always looked forward to his Thursday matches with his golfing buddies. Just before his 80th birthday, while paired in a mixed-double golf tournament in King City, Ray met his second love, Margie Wright. Together, Ray and Margie’s, favorite past times included taking periodic bus rides to Spirit Mountain, relaxing in Palm Springs, and touring the Oregon Coast.
Ray was very well-liked and loved by many. His dry sense of humor, contagious smile, and quick wit will be missed by all that knew him. Ray is survived by his three children; David Rogers, Cheri Rogers Tolar, and Cindi Stanley and his five grandchildren; James Zea, Jessy Rogers, Whitney Tolar, John Tolar, and Hailee Stanley, and two step grandchildren: Pam Stanley and Brian Stanley, and by his two son-in-laws; Terry Tolar and Kerry Stanley.
