Dick Schrupp was born in Minneapolis, the youngest of Manfred and Delma Schrupp's three sons. In 1948, the family moved to San Diego, where Delma taught gifted and special needs children and Manfred was the Dean of Education at San Diego State University. Dick attended San Diego State before enlisting in the US Air Force, where his service took him to several US bases as well as to Guam and Germany.
It was while serving at RAF Bruggen in Germany that Dick found himself appearing on stage in 'The Brides of March', a comedy directed by Flying Officer Alison Rowlands, WRAF. Although that was the beginning and the end of his acting career, he married Alison in London in 1975 (and the family likes to say she has been directing his life ever since). Soon after their wedding, Dick was reassigned to Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, where he served until he decided to reenter civilian life and become a real estate broker. During their happy years in Albuquerque, the births of their children John and Jillian provided great joy. Dick found his calling in being a father and could not have been prouder of his son and daughter.
In 1990, the family moved to Sacramento. After John's brain surgery in 1994, Dick became his full-time caregiver and a wonderful at-home dad to both children and many pets. In 1998, another relocation brought them to Portland where many family events were celebrated over the years. Notable among these was Jillian's wedding, when Dick spoke movingly of his pride in his daughter and his pleasure at welcoming Kyle Heacock to the family.
Dick passed away suddenly but peacefully at home. He was pre-deceased by his parents and his brother Fritz. He is survived by Alison, his loving wife of 39 years, his children John, Jillian and Kyle, his brother Jim, and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. He will be remembered for his kindness, his generosity, his ridiculous sense of humor, his sentimentality, and his enormous pleasure in his home and in family times at Cape Kiwanda.
