2 Timothy 4:7 - I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith

Richard (Dick) Edwin Woods was born August 29, 1930 to Harold and Lura Riggins Woods in Lincoln, Nebraska. He moved with his family to San Diego, California in 1937. He started attending East San Diego Christian Church with his brothers, Bob and Jerry, to play baseball. While there, he came to know Jesus as his Lord and savior through his future wife, Ruth’s influence and was baptized by Mr. Whipple in April 1946. He graduated from Hoover High School in 1950

He met Ruth Washburn at the East San Diego Christian Church and they were married by their pastor, Anor Emerson, on July 22, 1951. Dick attended Northwest Christian College in the early 1950’s preparing for the ministry. Work, school and family became too much and Dick and Ruth and their son, Gary, headed back to San Diego. Dick got a job as an appliance repairman at Sears Roebuck and Company. He enjoyed all of his life fixing things. His specialty was sewing machines.

Dick served as Youth Director at both Chula Visa Christian Church and East San Diego Christian Church. He and Ruth enjoyed working and investing in young people for many years. He also served as an Elder at East San Diego Christian Church.

In 1967, Dick and Ruth moved their family of five children back to Eugene, Oregon to complete his degree from Northwest Christian College in 1969. He was ordained into the ministry at East San Diego Christian Church on June 15, 1969.

He Served Churches in: Springfield, Oregon; Selma, California; El Cajon, California; Bloomington, Indiana; La Plata, Missouri; Prescott, Arizona (part-time in retirement). After living 5 years in Arizona they moved back to La Plata, MO and in July 2000 served as Interim pastor at First Christian Church, Kirksville, MO.

Dick has suffered with dementia for the last several years, and had been living at Morningstar Memory Care for the past 21 months. He passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, September 12, 2021 at 91 years of age. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Ruth; his five children, Gary (Judy) of King City, OR, Mark (Theresa) of Edgewood, New Mexico, Cory (Margery), of Oviedo, Spain, John (Janet) of Sherwood, Oregon and Lori Smucker (Lonnie) of Portland, Oregon. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren: Kendra, Harmony, Jack, Jason, Brittany, Jeremiah, Jonathan, Alisha, Spencer and Hannah; and 10 great grandchildren. His sister, Carol Smith, of San Diego, California also survives him.

Of course, since he was my dad, I have a lot of memories. We had a great life together. But one memory that sticks out today is that Dad was ordained to the Ministry on Father's day, June 15, 1969. Then 5 years later, I was ordained to the Ministry on Father's Day, June 16, 1974. Dad was the speaker that day. It made it very special.

Besides ministry, dad and I shared a love for genealogy. We have traveled all over the country visiting cemeteries and courthouses. We had a lot of fun together. I will miss working together as genealogy detectives. Dad, I'll continue the search. Rest in Peace. I love you

My sympathy to your family. From the moment the Woods family arrived in Selma California the Woods and Bennett families were intertwined. Dick and Dale were born the same year and both couples were married the same year. All of the kids were close in age and we became good friends. Besides the love of the Lord Jesus Christ, Dick and Dale shared the love of ice cream and would find every excuse to partake. If there is ice cream in heaven, they are eating Ruth's frozen lemonade dessert. My prayers are with you. Love, Kathy

Dick was my first Youth Pastor at East San Diego Christian Church and was a huge influence on the development of my Christian faith. He and Ruth loved all of us unconditionally and radiated the love of Jesus in so many wonderful ways! The sweetest memories I have of him was taking us to Loch Leven for my first church camp, taking us to a Gulls Hockey game, and taking us to Mt Helix for an Easter Sunrise Service. He also influenced me to choose Northwest Christian College where I obtained my BS in Christian Education in 1976. I loved this man very much! His gentle spirit, kindness and faithfulness, and love of his own family and church family, and service to the Lord will be a lasting legacy. “We’ll done, good and faithful servant.” Sending hugs and prayers to you, Ruth and to all your wonderful family, as you celebrate and mourn the loss of this amazing man. 🙏🏼💞🙏🏼

Dick worked for my dad Hank delivering milk. At the time I thought it was odd our pastor was delivering milk! As I got older I realized Dick was going the extra mile to provide for his family.

I was a member at First Christian Church in El Cajon, CA when Pastor Dick served there. I always liked his sermons and always left church feeling blessed, also he baptized me. I had the pleasure of knowing his family, and being at their home a time or two. I also attended NCC and had the pleasure of meeting and attending NCC with his future daughter in law Judy, this is also how i got to know Gary. I had the pleasure of reuniting with Dick and Ruth in Oregon, and other friends from the church in El Cajon and NCC, we all had a wonderful time. Then with my friend Margaret (Veach) Cleveland and Mama Bobbie, we had the pleasure of seeing them again in their home, we had a wonderful time. Pastor Dick loved the Lord and his family, and i know he will be greatly missed by all that had the pleasure of knowing him. I will be praying for you all. Love, Susan

Our Dear Friends,

We extend to you our sympathy on the passing of your beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather and Great Grandfather. We think back decades when we were just youth growing up in East San Diego Christian Church and Dick was our Youth Director there. So many memories of youth activities at the church, church camp at Loch Leven, district youth rallies and so much more. And you playing the organ for the church Ruthie. What a wonderful family to have in our church. My dad was very proud of both Dick and Gary as Timothys of East San Diego Christian Church. While the last years were difficult, Dick is now in the presence of the Lord he so faithfully served. For Linda and I we will never forget the beautiful memories of growing up at East San Diego Christian Church and the presence Dick had in our young lives. God bless the Wood's Family!
