Janet, as she was known to her friends and family, lived and attended school in Holtville, California. The daughter of Ronald and Lena Layton, Janet was raised on the family farm, North of town. Janet married Ted Jones and soon after moved to Fort Benning, Georgia, where Ted was stationed. There, in Georgia, she had her first child, a son named Mark. Sadly, Mark only lived seven days and was buried at the Fort Benning Main Post Cemetery. After Ted was discharged, they returned to Holtville. While living in Holtville, Janet and Ted welcomed three daughters, Sharlene, Marlene, and Cindie.
With their three young daughters in tow, Janet and Ted moved to Shaw, Oregon just outside of Salem. They owned and operated a large farm and their daughters attended an one-room schoolhouse adjacent to their home.
Janet loved living in Oregon. She loved the forest, the rain and the snow. She loved having family that lived nearby and family that would come for extended visits each summer. She enjoyed big family gatherings, and of course, “Ladies” poker night.
Eventually, the farm was sold and the family moved to town. When her daughters were older, Janet sought employment outside the home and for over twenty years she worked in the banking industry. After Janet retired from U.S. Bank, she settled in Tigard Oregon.
Janet was happiest when she was spending time with family and friends. When she could, she would travel to Michigan and California to visit her family. She always looked forward to spending time with her daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Janet’s wise counsel, kind heart, sharp wit and sweet smile will be missed by all who know and love her.
Shirley Janet Jones was preceded in death by her son Mark Jones, daughter Sharlene Jones; father Ronald Layton, mother Lena Layton; sister Barbara Layton Trantham and brother Timothy Layton.
Janet is survived by her daughters Marlene Jones Major, Cindie Jones Kellner, her brother Ronald William “Bill” Layton, sister Roxann Layton Stapleton and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
