Alfred was my math tutor while I was at Park. My Mom would drive me to his house and he spent an hour each week helping me improve such that I could move into the A group. My love of math started at that time. I went on to major in Math in college. math helped me very much in grad school since I went to an MBA program that was very required very strong math skills. He also was assistant baseball coach and I played on that team. I'm sad he died so young.

Beautiful service, I'm so glad I was there.  Many memories of things that I'd long forgotten and was so glad to remember.  Thank you to those who spoke, especially to those who didn't plan to. I arrived at Park School as a 6th grader in the fall of 1982 and was lucky enough to be placed in Alfie's pre-algebra class. He was an incredible, patient teacher and friend to me, then a very shy and insecure student. I was lucky enough to have him teach me again when he was working at Sylvan. If not for Alfie I would not have done as well as I did in advanced level math classes in high school or on my SATS. I will miss him.

Like yesterday, I remember coming back from a field trip to Williamsburg in the back of Alfie's station wagon, listening to a John Denver tape, and thinking "This is what life should be like."  I was 12, it was 1978, and it was but one of many happy Alfie memories that have stayed with me into adulthood.

Al and I had much in common. We both graduated from Johns Hopkins, taught math at Park School, and bowled together in Baltimore area duckpin minor leagues for many years. He was a good friend who passed too young. He will be missed.

I was so sad to hear of his death.   I knew him as "Mr. Siemon," my math teacher at Park School.  I think it was around 7th grade, or 1963-64.  He was caring and young-at-heart and a very proficient teacher -- as well as an enthusiastic and dedicated track-and-field coach.   Any skill I have in math is due in large part to Mr Siemon's teaching.   I'm sure many of my class-mates, such as Jeff Kleiman, feel his loss, like I do.

Alfie was a natural teacher--patient, composed, kind.  He was able to locate the student's point of confusion and clarify that area enough for the student to proceed independently.  A gifted man.

I knew Alfie from Sylvan and I remember how caring and concerned he was with all the students. He made me feel welcome when I first joined the Pikesville team. My deepest sympathy goes out to all his family and friends.

I met Alfie the day I went to Park School in 1972 to be interviewed and take their admissions test.  He was incredibly warm and friendly.  I never had the fortune to have him as a teacher, but he was my faculty advisor even though he was on the middle school faculty and I was in the upper school.  He probably had the strongest call for teaching that I have ever seen, and was at his best with helping students get through their panic about math to think clearly and understand how it works.  I don't think many of his 6th and 7th grade math students realized until they had their own children that he had them doing high school algebra before they left his classroom. He graduated from Park School when he was 16 and came back at the age of 19 to teach the highest level math classes - but his degree was actually in European history.

I met Al about 16 years ago and through that time I got to know the kind thoughtful person that he was.  He was all about teaching his students and would plan his life around their schedule and was always concerned with their progress.  He was proud of "his kids" and their achievements.  My son, Sam always remembered how Alfie helped him pass the SATs and got him into the college he wanted.  Al Siemon touched a lot of lives.  He was the pebble that created the ripples in the pond we call life.  The full extent of the positive effect he had will never be fully known.  He changed so many lives by just being here.  He will be missed.  God bless you and keep you Alfie!

Alfred H. Siemon II worked for Sylvan over 25 years as Pikesville's College Prep Coordinator.  Over these years he has worked with many students to achieve their college prep goals and built relationships with Sylvan staff members.
