Bruce Alan Perler, MD

Bruce knew from childhood that he wanted to become a surgeon. Born and raised in New Bedford, Massachusetts, to Julius Leonard and Muriel Marcia Perler, he was the first person in his family to attend college. He credited his parents with instilling in him the values of hard work, honesty, and loyalty, which guided him throughout his life and career.

Bruce attended Duke University, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa, and earned his medical degree from the Duke University School of Medicine. Duke remained an important part of his life, particularly during basketball season. After medical school, he completed his internship and residency in general surgery, followed by clinical and research training in vascular surgery, at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He later earned an MBA from Johns Hopkins University, receiving the Outstanding Student Award at graduation.

Bruce joined the faculty of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1982 and spent 44 years building a career devoted to patient care, education, research, and leadership in vascular surgery. He continued seeing patients and practicing medicine until shortly before his death.

Medicine was Bruce’s passion. He believed it required excellence in scientific research, clinical judgment, surgical technique, teaching, and in the responsibility a physician assumes when a patient places a life in their hands. He was exacting, intensely focused, and rarely satisfied with anything less than the best result available.

He was deeply committed to his patients. His concern for them did not end when an operation or course of treatment was completed.

He remembered their histories, followed their progress, and remained connected to many of them for years, and sometimes decades, after treating them. He was internationally recognized for his clinical expertise in carotid arterial disease and was respected for both his surgical skill and his knowledge of the field.

At Johns Hopkins, Bruce established and led the Division of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy. In 2002, he was named the inaugural recipient of the Julius H. Jacobson II, MD, Endowed Chair in Vascular Surgery. He served as Chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy, Vice Chair for Clinical Operations and Financial Affairs, and later Chief Emeritus. He directed the Vascular Noninvasive Laboratory at The Johns Hopkins Hospital beginning in 1982 and founded the hospital’s Vascular Surgery Fellowship in 1998. His work helped expand Johns Hopkins’ clinical, diagnostic, and educational capabilities in vascular medicine.

Teaching was central to Bruce’s career. He educated and mentored generations of surgeons, physicians, nurses, and physician assistants in the art and science of vascular surgery. He expected a great deal from the people he taught, took their development seriously, and remained invested in their careers long after their formal training ended. In recognition of his commitment to education, he received the Outstanding Faculty Teaching Award from the surgical house staff at Johns Hopkins.

Bruce was deeply respected and warmly regarded by colleagues throughout the field. They valued his expertise, candor, loyalty, dry sense of humor, and commitment to their success. Although naturally quiet and introverted, he became an accomplished speaker known for his command of detail, polished presentations, and ability to speak without notes. Over the course of his career, he delivered nearly 400 lectures at national and international conferences.

Bruce authored hundreds of publications, research papers, and book chapters, which were cited more than 12,000 times. He served as Senior Editor of the Journal of Vascular Surgery and co-edited the ninth, tenth, and eleventh editions of Rutherford’s Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy, the leading textbook in the field.

He served as president of the Chesapeake Vascular Society, the Eastern Vascular Society, the Southern Association for Vascular Surgery, and the Society for Vascular Surgery. Through those leadership roles, he helped shape the development and future direction of the specialty.

In 2015, Bruce was appointed Associate Executive Director for Vascular Surgery at the American Board of Surgery, where he oversaw vascular surgery assessment and board certification. From 2019 through 2024, he served as Vice President of the organization. In those roles, he helped establish and maintain the standards expected of vascular surgeons throughout the country.

Bruce’s contributions were recognized with numerous honors, including the Southern Association for Vascular Surgery Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021 and the Society for Vascular Surgery Lifetime Achievement Award in 2025, the organization’s highest honor. The award recognized his clinical care, academic leadership, and contributions to the advancement of vascular surgery.

Away from medicine, Bruce’s hobbies were straightforward: watching television, following Duke basketball, spending time with his dog, and watching Jeopardy! with his children, often answering before the contestants did. He had a particular love for his late dogs, Prince and Maya, and for Lucy, who remained faithfully beside him through his final illness.

Bruce and his wife, Patricia, shared 35 years of marriage and raised their children, Rachel and Mason. His family knew the same intelligence, intensity, strong opinions, and determination that shaped his professional life. They also knew the routines and ordinary moments outside the hospital: evenings in front of the television, basketball games, family conversations, and dogs always nearby.

Twelve days before his death, Bruce was present at the wedding of his daughter Rachel and her wife, Sofia. His presence that day will remain one of his family’s most cherished memories.

Bruce is survived by his wife, Patricia Perler; his daughter, Rachel Corrine Perler-Costas; and her wife, Sofia. He was preceded in death by his son, Mason, and his sister, Ilene Brown.

He will be remembered as a surgeon who expected excellence, a physician who remained committed to his patients long after their treatment ended, a leader who helped shape the field of vascular surgery, and a teacher whose influence continues through the many people he trained.

The family will receive friends at the Lemmon Funeral Home of Dulaney Valley, Inc. 10 W. Padonia Road (at York Road) Timonium, Maryland 21093 on Sunday, August 9, 2026 from 2 to 4 PM at which time Dr. Perler’s life will be celebrated at 4 PM.
