At many parish social events Mary Lou was  the  upfront person, but Calvin  was was always behind the scene making sure everything went smoothly.
We also enjoyed the times we were together at with them and Sherry and Phillippe at  the Swinski's Ocean City home.
Calvin was a great guy and will be missed.

Of course, many fond memories of the Jeffersons over in the Cedonia area (going bowling often, when visiting), And out in Cockeysville, kitchen-centric gatherings!

But for Pic, an odd thing occurred sometime in the early 1980s. Pic was the project head for the Army Corps of Engineers' beach replenishment in Ocean City. And when I was a reporter at WBOC-TV, I had to interview him when he presented the city council with the plan. It was odd but I also had to put in my story something like, "Mr. Jefferson is married to this reporter's cousin," as a disclosure. But he was the one to interview! 

His care, renovation and repair work on the Costantini family antique carriage was fantastic and greatly appreciated. There probably wasn't much that he didn't know how to fix!

The Jefferson men were known for wearing hats where ever they went.  And it usually went along with the theme of where they were going!  Dad just had to have this hat on our vacation to Walt Disney World!
And it came in handy last year when he posed for a picture on Halloween with Andrew, Jessica and Baby Andy, all dressed in Disney costumes!! ( that picture will be my tomorrow post)

To say I’m sad I lost my father-in -law is an understatement. I was not worried that COVID-19 would do him under, he beat so many other obstacles. He was still working as a consultant/civil engineer at age 82! 

I had the privilege to know Dad since I was 18, marry his only son, have 4 of his grandchildren, and enjoy several vacations with him and Mom. 

Dad was the “tiebreaker” grandparent — our kids had one grandfather (Leo) 100% Polish, one grandmother (Mary Lou) 100% Italian, and one grandmother (Catherine) 100% Irish. Dad J was 50% Irish, 50% English/“colonial, Native American & German. So Irish prevailed!

A Johns Hopkins graduate, he worked for US Army Corps of Engineers where he worked at the Naval Academy, Mount Saint Helens after it erupted, and many other projects around the country and Baltimore MD area. You never know he was also pretty damn good cake baker for his wife Mary Lou’s catering business; had quite a collection of cake pan shapes including old  collector Disney ones. 

He ran the PTA at his kids’ school for a number of years, took his oldest grandson to Cub Scouts and other activities when he was semi-retired, lent us a week of his timeshare for our honeymoon in Mazatlan Mexico, 

I liked that he was a member of Pershing Rifles when he was younger,  I believe at Loyola High School, something shared in common because I was a member of a rifle drill team in college (Ohio State’s AF ROTC Centurions). 

He loved fire engines and was often on the CB radio following where the fires were, racing out to follow the trucks to the site. 

He had the nickname ”Pic”, short for “Pickle” because he’d get bruised so much getting in fights when he was young. 

Cal, my husband, thought so much of his dad he made him best man at our wedding. I appreciate his toast that day. 

He was the best father-in-law a gal could ask, and a wonderful, involved dad, grandfather and uncle. I’ll miss him terribly. It hasn’t hit yet. Unfair. Love you, Dad ❤️

Persephone loved to dress people up.  Pop was more than happy when it was his turn to put the wig on!!!

We were celebrating dad’s birthday and Persephone said the Pop needed a birthday hat - how appropriate she found this one for him!!

Thanks Dad for loving Persephone so much!!

He was proud of me when I got into Calvert Hall… except on Thanksgiving. We were rivals during the Turkey Bowl. Glad he was able to enjoy it with his Great Grandson. Possible Future Don or Cardinal!
