Born at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore on September 5, 1942, Carolyn’s life was defined by faith, service, and love for her family and community. She attended St. Bernard’s School and Mount Saint Agnes High School. Following high school, she answered her religious calling as a Sister of Mercy for a time. She would later study at Mount Saint Agnes College (now Loyola University Maryland), to pursue her lifelong vocation as a nurse.
Carolyn’s nursing career spanned decades and touched countless lives. She served in the Emergency Room at Johns Hopkins Hospital, later worked at Franklin Square Hospital and at Sunrise Assisted Living, and eventually retired to spend more time with her husband, children and grandchildren.
Carolyn and Mike enjoyed 41 years of marriage before his passing. They travelled extensively visiting their large extended family all over the country, on Mike’s company Electrolux trips which took them to Hawaii, Australia, and many other locations.
Carolyn’s caring spirit extended far beyond her nursing career. She and Mike shared this spirit. Together, they were always ready to jump in and help others, offer a lending hand and opened their home and hearts to anyone at a moment's notice.
Carolyn lived in Cockeysville for 37 years before moving to Towson, where her retirement years were full and joyful. She loved game nights of Canasta and Mahjong, was an avid reader belonging to a cherished book club with close friends of Ivy Hall, and rarely missed a chance to try a new crabcake or plan a trip to the beach. Carolyn was deeply rooted in her Catholic faith as a member of Church of the Nativity in Timonium, where she participated in Small Groups, served as a Rosary Leader and Eucharistic Minister. She also found community in water aerobics at Merritt Towson and remained close with her high school classmates. A two-time cancer survivor, she faced both breast and ovarian cancer with remarkable courage.
Above all, Carolyn loved being with her family. She delighted in keeping up with her many nieces and nephews, always remembering birthdays and milestones with cards, calls, or texts.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Michael Timothy McCarthy, Sr.; parents, Randolph and Frances Dorman; sister Barbara Dorman McCarthy; sisters-in-law Patricia Kennedy McCarthy and Mary Ann McCarthy Clark; and brothers-in-law Daniel, Patrick, and James McCarthy.
Carolyn is survived by her children, Jennifer Jones (Anthony) and Michael McCarthy (Nancy); and by her grandchildren, Ethan Michael and Claire Ansley Jones, and Gideon Henry and Reid Francis McCarthy. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law Colleen McCarthy Ricciardi; Sandra Lundin McCarthy; Maureen McCarthy Moody; brothers-in-law Padraic McCarthy (Vicki); and Donald Clark. She is also lovingly remembered by multiple generations of nieces and nephews.
