Carolyn Marie Seletzky, a longtime resident of Cherryfield, Maine, and Hampstead, Maryland, and a loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, and grandmother, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2026, in California, where she moved several years ago to be closer to her children and grandchildren.
Carolyn was born to Earl Herbert Heckman and Bettie Jean (Boles) Heckman on October 25, 1944, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After family relocations to Kansas City, Kansas, Dallas, Texas, and Tulsa, Oklahoma, the Heckmans settled in Severna Park, Maryland, where she attended Severna Park High School. It was here that she met the love of her life, Lee Dimitri Seletzky, at age 14. She earned a diploma in nursing in 1965 at the Lucy Webb Hayes School of Nursing at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C., and began her nursing practice at Saint Agnes Hospital.
Carolyn and Lee married and had two sons, Dimitri Lee Seletzky and Alexis Lee Seletzky. In 1976, they moved to a small farm in Hampstead, Maryland, where their youngest son, Aaron Lee Seletzky, was born. Carolyn continued to pursue her education in nursing while working as a nurse and in 1979, earned a Bachelor of Science in nursing from the University of Maryland. The family regularly vacationed in Maine, where Carolyn loved to kayak while Lee fished for trout and salmon. In 1990, she and Lee followed their hearts and moved to Cherryfield, Maine.
Lee passed away unexpectedly of a heart attack in March 1995. After Lee’s death, Carolyn attended graduate school at the University of Southern Maine in Portland and became a nurse practitioner, joining the practice of Dr. John Gaddis, D.O., in Machias. For 20 years, she worked with him in a job she loved, providing medical care to patients from across Downeast Maine. She retired from the practice in 2018 and moved to Ellicott City, Maryland, to be closer to family and friends.
Carolyn was a lifelong Christian who loved the Lord. She faithfully attended church in the Episcopalian parishes where she lived and made charitable gifts to those churches, as well as many other causes. She loved music of all kinds, and she and Lee shared a particular reverence for Bob Dylan—a devotion they passed on to their children. She delighted in detective stories, whether in books by authors including Agatha Christie and P.D. James, or on screen.
She loved gardening and had a knack for growing vegetables and flowers. She was also a marvelous cook and baker, sharing her love of great food (especially Maryland blue crab, lobsters, scallops, and home-baked Christmas cookies) with her sons and grandchildren.
Family was always at the center of Carolyn’s life. She is survived by her son Dimitri and his wife, Leta, and their sons Lee, Nelson, and Isaac; her son Alexis and his wife, Lindsay, and their sons Luke and Jake; and her son Aaron and his wife, Allison, and their daughter, Cooper. She is also survived by her brother Jim Heckman and his wife, Kathy, and many loving nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister Linda Heckman, and sadly, their sister Rebecca Heckman passed away shortly after Carolyn’s death, on February 9, 2026.
A graveside service will be held at Druid Ridge Cemetery, 7900 Park Heights Ave, Baltimore, Maryland 21208, on April 3, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. Following the funeral, a reception will be held at the home of Jim and Kathy Heckman.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be directed in Mrs. Seletzky’s memory to Meals on Wheels America.
