UNITAS - On May 25, 2021 at home and surrounded by family, Christopher Michael Unitas, 61, affectionately called “Toaster,” departed this life hand in hand with his beloved wife Michele (nee Calvert), after a lengthy illness; adoring father of Alexandra A. Unitas, Nicholas H. Unitas and stepfather to Emily C. Veillon; cherished son of the late Dorothy Jean and John Constantine Unitas, and beloved brother of Janice Ann Unitas, Robert F. Unitas, Kenneth E. Unitas and John C. Unitas, Jr.
After graduation from Calvert Hall College, Christopher began courses in restaurant management but life events changed his course and a few years later he found himself in an entry-level meter reading position with Baltimore Gas and Electric, thus beginning his 35 year long career with the utility. At BGE Christopher progressed his way through several facets of the electric utility to include stints in power generation stations, sub-stations and time as a traveling operator; to finish up as an outage scheduler for transmission systems operations. No matter where Chris went he made life-long friends in his curmudgeonly, yet affable, manner that showed he had a heart of gold underneath.
During his time with BGE, Christopher married and began a family resulting in two wonderful children he adored until the end of his life. Alexandra's curiosity and eagerness to be her father's apprentice with home repair, chores and her inherited affinity for tinkering around the house, influenced her career choice in the HVAC trade. Long father-son afternoons spent fishing and sharing life's lessons, led Nicholas to pursue his passion for the electrical trade. Christopher was proud of both his children and their trade career choices, giving him peace of mind they would never find themselves without a necessary marketable skill in which they could flourish. Chris set store in his family and spent quality time with his children as much as possible; either at frequent outings to the beach or around the swimming pool he had built to make their house a home they would always treasure with the memories they made.
Christopher met his current wife, Michele, just as the specter of his illness was beginning to cast its shadow. While not his first love, she was his last and greatest love. She took the reins of his early care from his devoted sister Janice, as Michele saw him along the difficult path to his initial emancipation from cancer and lovingly bore the burden along with his children when it resurfaced. Chris embraced his remaining life alongside his devoted wife and children while creating adventures from the mundane and making friends wherever they went. Nearly inseparable, Michele held his hand throughout his journey and finally to its bittersweet end, never missing a single night without an 'I love you' or a goodnight kiss when he could no longer form the words. Christopher will be sorely missed by many friends and family.
The family will receive friends in the Lemmon Funeral Home of Dulaney Valley, Inc., 10 W. Padonia Road (at York Road) Timonium, MD 21093 on Friday, June 11, 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm and on Saturday, June 12, 10:00 am - 11:00 am at which time a Celebration of Christopher's Life will begin at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Gilchrist Hospice Care at 11311 McCormick Road, Suite 350, Hunt Valley, Maryland 21031.
