On Monday, June 17, 2024, Daniel Sheehan Macedo “Dan” was called home to the Lord surrounded by his loving family. He is the beloved husband of Mary M. Macedo (née McRell); loving father of Ann Macedo, Susan Macedo, Stephen Macedo and his wife Nikki, and Peter Macedo; cherished grandfather of Daniel Macedo and Joseph Macedo; treasured son of the late Helen and Manuel P.S. Macedo; dear brother of the late John E. Macedo and brother-in-law of Ann Prince; uncle of many nieces and nephews and is also survived by other loving extended family and friends.
In his younger years Dan was known as a star athlete and continued with an active life beyond his school days. He was a member of the Baltimore Road Runners Club, participating in races well into his senior years.
After graduating Providence College Dan joined the Gulf Oil Corporation and continued with them through their merger with Chevron until his early retirement in his 50s. Throughout his career Dan was a very hard worker but always dedicated the most time to his family as well as church.
Dan’s devotion to Mary spanned over 61 years and they never stopped dating. He was also always present in his children’s lives, teaching them not only the importance of hard work and honesty, or the love of coin collecting, but life skills such as where the best sledding hills or skating ponds could be found, or how to pick up a crab without being pinched, how to cut up and hook live bait for fishing, how to oil and soften a baseball glove, eat steamers, give a firm handshake, play chess, negotiate the best price at a a tag sale, and how to end the nightly bedside prayers with a really jazzed up rendition of “Amen”.
Dan was early to bed and early to rise , and he never needed an alarm clock. He met each day before sunrise; went for his walk, run, or cycle; came home to shower and ate breakfast, then attended Mass before returning with the morning paper usually before anyone else in the family had risen.
Post-retirement provided more time for activities and volunteerism. Dan became a baby cuddler for Mount Washington Pediatric Hospital, giving comfort to some of the most needy patients; he did background work as an extra in film and television; was a money counter for several churches and brought Communion to those who were unable to attend; and was additionally very hands-on in a variety of duties to help races, both in and out of State. Most notable of these was his popular water stop found in the woods along the path of a particular annual race. The water stop had a secret theme each year and Dan worked hard to make sure that those on his team dressed accordingly, in full regalia in order to provide weary runners laughter and encouragement as they came upon his set-up in the middle of the forest before continuing on their way. Dan always knew the value of making those around him laugh and was good at it.
“Racing isn’t about how long it takes you to get to the finish, it’s the adventure you have along the way, the people you meet, and the unique moments you share.”
—- Simon Wheatcroft
Everyone who knew Dan knew that he had a sweet tooth and rarely met a bad day for a Snickers bar. He also enjoyed a good hot fudge sundae, a slice of banana cream or lemon meringue pie, or Mary’s homemade chocolate pudding. The sweet tooth will live on with his children, and they are up for the task.
Dan was an extraordinary man who lived his life to the fullest. The friends that he met throughout the years stayed close to his heart and Dan made a point of calling and writing many of them on a regular basis. He will be dearly and deeply missed by many.
A Celebration of Dan's Life will take place on Sunday, July 14, 2024, at the Lemmon Funeral Home of Dulaney Valley, Inc. 10 W. Padonia Road, Timonium, Maryland 21093. The family will receive friends from 10 AM until 12 Noon at which time Catholic Prayers will be held. Interment is private.
In lieu of flowers charitable donations may be made in Dan’s name to Doctors Without Borders at https://www.doctorswithoutborders.org/
