Dennis was a devoted family man, accomplished business owner, veteran, and proud Marylander. Dennis was the devoted husband of the late Catherine “Betsy” E. Gieron for 44 beautiful years; beloved father of Denise G. Church and her husband John V. and the late Gregory M. Gieron; devoted brother of Kathleen G. Fairman; cherished grandfather of Jasmine Y. Gieron, Jessica E. Gieron, Meghan C. Rennard and her husband Michael G., Jennifer M. Gieron, and Alexander W. Church; great grandfather of Oliviya, Max, Miles, and Connor.
Dennis was born in Highlandtown, Maryland in 1935. A lifelong learner with a sharp mind, Dennis attended Mount Saint Joseph High School on a full academic scholarship, graduating in 1952. He continued his education at Johns Hopkins University, earning his Civil Engineering degree in 1956. While at Hopkins, he channeled his competitive spirit onto the tennis courts, playing for the University’s tennis team.
Following his graduation, Dennis answered the call to serve his country, enlisting in the United States Army in 1956. Commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, he utilized his sharp mind as an Army Engineer. By the time of his honorable discharge in 1958, he had achieved the rank of Captain.
Dennis possessed an entrepreneurial spirit. He founded his own business, "Dennis Associates, Inc." which he proudly and successfully operated alongside his lovely bride and the love of his life, Catherine "Betsy". Together, they formed an inseparable partnership in both life and business.
Above all, Dennis was a wonderful, loving and devoted caregiver to his wife and family, always putting their needs and well-being above his own. He and Betsy would often take enjoyable trips with the entire family.
An avid and passionate sports fan, Dennis cheered fiercely for Baltimore football, spanning generations from the Colts to the Baltimore Ravens even experiencing the thrill of attending the Super Bowl and the Super Bowl party that followed. His love for sports extended to the racetrack; he was an enthusiastic fan of horse racing, annually attending the Preakness, and looked forward to his travels to Saratoga Springs to watch the horses run. He enjoyed the Orioles triumphs and managed a fantasy baseball team “Shark Tank” for over 35 years.
Dennis embraced the simple pleasures of Maryland life and loved sharing them with others. He enjoyed eating many different types of food at Sabatino’s, Haussner’s and Matthew’s Pizzeria. He took great joy in teaching countless friends and family members how to drive and, just as importantly, how to properly pick and eat Maryland hardshell crabs. A true seafood lover, he was known for making a fantastic soft-shell crab sandwich.
With a quick wit and an insatiable curiosity, Dennis loved trivia questions, complex riddles, and a lively game of Bingo. He was a voracious reader, a passionate writer, and occasionally enjoyed testing his luck and strategy at the blackjack table.
His legacy of love, dedication to family, and vibrant enthusiasm for life will be forever cherished by all who knew and loved him.
