Dr. Ramon F. Roig Jr.

Ramon Fernando Roig-Calderon, affectionately known as Ray or Moncho, was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on May 18, 1933, to Ramon Fernando Roig-Díaz and Carmen Maria Roig-Calderon. He met his future wife, Aida Esther Nazario-Quintana, on a university trip to Europe in 1952. He graduated from the University of Puerto Rico Magna Cum Laude and an ROTC commission in 1955. Ray and Aida married in May 1955 in San German, Puerto Rico and moved to Baltimore where he attended the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Upon graduation from medical school as Chief Resident, he fulfilled his ROTC obligation as a Captain in the Medical Corps in the US Air Force at Andrews AFB MD.

Dr. Roig built a successful medical practice in Internal Medicine, specializing in Gastroenterology. In the early 1980’s he served as the President of the Medical Staff at St. Joseph Hospital in Towson MD. Later in his career, he established a private clinic, the St. Joseph Endoscopy Center, on the grounds of what is now known as University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center. His patients and colleagues remember him as an intelligent and caring physician and his gentle bedside manner was genuine.

Ray shared many talents, interests, and hobbies with his family, and many were self-taught: carpentry, electrical wiring, sailing, hunting, fishing, racquetball, golf, drawing, painting, dogs, gardening, cooking, star gazing, classical music, and traveling around the world. He and his wife hosted family gatherings at their home in Towson and they enjoyed vacationing at their home on Lake Opinicon in Ontario, Canada during the summer months. Moncho and Aida were also long-time members of the Baltimore Yacht Club and The Country Club of Maryland.In the last few years, Ray suffered from dementia and gradually struggled with communication and memory. Watching this decline made our hearts feel heavy and sorrowful. We take comfort in knowing he is resting peacefully now.

In addition to Aida, his wife of almost 69 years, Ray is survived by their two daughters, Aida Esther Roig Compton (Peter), and Carmen Maria Roig Cockey (Chris), and their two sons, Ramon Fernando Roig, III, ( Stacey) and José Oscar Roig (Kristen); grandchildren Miles L. Compton and his wife Brandy, Laura Compton Diaz and her husband Julio, Ramon F. Roig, IV, “Chip” and his wife Erica, Erin Roig Siller and her husband John, Jonathan G. Roig, Meghan N. Roig, and Michelle E. Roig and her fiancé Kyle . He will be missed.

Relatives and friends are invited to gather at the Lemmon Funeral Home of Dulaney Valley, Inc. 10 W. Padonia Road, Timonium, Maryland 21093 on Friday, February 9, 2024 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm and

6:00pm to 8:00pm.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at the Carmelite Monastery, 1318 Dulaney Valley Road, Towson, Maryland 21286 on Saturday, February 10, 2024 at 10:00am

Interment private.
