Mrs. B was my chemistry teacher at Northern High School for two years in 1974-1976.  She retired the year I graduated.  She was a magnificent teacher - and she inspired me to enter the field of chemistry when I started college.  I knew that I had a very good background in the subject and this gave me confidence that I could do it.  Mrs. B was such a delight in class but she always stayed on task and kept us on our toes.  She showed a great deal of caring on a personal level with her students.  After two years with her chemistry class, she made us a hot milk cake, and I still use that recipe!  My family calls it Mrs. Beckwith's cake (my older brother Rick also had Mrs. B for chemistry).  Mrs. B and I exchanged cards at Christmas for 33 years!  I followed all the major milestones in her life and she in mine.  I became a chemistry professor at Georgetown U and now I work for the federal government as a science administrator.  At the National Science Foundation, we know the value of a great science teacher, especially in advancing women in science.   I loved her and will miss her.  She was beloved by our class and I'm sure - by many others at Northern.  God Bless and my sincere sympathy on your loss.

Even though I lived far away in Calif.,  my  dear Aunt Emily always was so thoughtful and I will miss her cards & notes at Christmas & B'days.  I shall always remember our  great road trip to Vermont in 1993 where cousin Connie,  Marks wife,  drove us from Maryland and we all really got to know each other. Mrs. Beckwith was my chemistry teacher in my senior year (68-69) at Northern High School in Baltimore, Md.

There are always some teachers that you remember and Mrs. Beckwith is one.

She always had a smile and taught in a way that you actually enjoyed going to class.  We especially had fun when it was lab day.

When I saw her irrepressible smile, I knew immediately that it was Mrs. B. 
That smile, that bright face brought back a flood of wonderful memories.
After all these years, 50 or more, her indomitable spirit and inner glow showed me that she had not changed one bit since the last time I saw her on Richmond Avenue. I was a little girl then and you were just a boy. We were childhood friends, but she was a magnetic personality that drew me to your house. In the short time you lived there, she showered me with love and affection as if I were her own child. She delighted in every detail of our small lives. Everyday was an adventure that she shared with us. She loved children and loved being a Mom.
Remember riding our bikes on the sidewalk; remember when my Mom bought each of us a rabbit; remember the summer you brought the ducks home from Montebello School; remember playing Tiddlywinks on your sun porch everyday? Life was so simple then. These are wonderful moments in my life that I still cherish.
Saying goodbye to our Mothers is the hardest part of life, the very saddest of days, but the person you are is the best of all she had to give you. 
I know she was so very proud of you and cherished you until the end of her life.
Mark, please accept my sincerest sympathy. May you find peace in knowing that your Mother touched so many people and enriched my life so many years ago.
