Gloria A. Perkins
March 4, 1941 – July 2, 2019
Gloria Alicia Jane Perkins, 78, passed away on July 2, 2019. Gloria was raised in Brooklyn, New York by her single mother Lola (Lolita) Braid Manderbach until her illness. She then went to Baltimore and was welcomed by her Uncle John and Aunt Carol Braid, who upon her mother’s death lovingly raised her as their own daughter with their three children Ellen, Bill and Niels Braid.
She started her hairdressing career at Charlotte’s Beauty Shop. In 1964, Gloria married Harley Perkins. They had a son, Brad in 1967 and a daughter, Susan in 1969. Gloria stayed home with the kids until she returned to work in 1975. She developed lifelong friendships with both her fellow hairdressers and her clients as she worked at a variety of shops including the Beauty Bazaar and eventually her own shop, Gloria’s Creative Edge.
In her retirement, she loved spending time with her grandchildren helping them discover the world. She bought them enough books to stock a library and loved to take them into nature exploring streams and hiking at Oregon Ridge. She often treated the grandkids to pancakes for dinner on their many overnight adventures. She also loved to garden and doted on her pets. Her great sense of humor lasted her entire life and was contagious.
She was a fiercely independent and capable woman who survived many struggles in her young life in Brooklyn. She was the most wonderful wife, mother, mother-in-law and grandmother that a family could ask for. Her generosity of spirit, humor and love will be deeply missed.
Loving wife of the late Harley Perkins; beloved mother of Susan Wichmann (husband Keith) and the late Brad Perkins; dear step mother to Don Perkins (wife Carol); along with her grandchildren Anna and Matthew Wichmann, Jen Cybert (husband Doug), Christopher Perkins, and Courtney Perkins; beloved sister to Gwinn Manderbach, Ellen Hillis, Bill Braid and Niels Braid.

When I first moved in next door Gloria and her husband were the first people to welcome us. She also invited us to her home and was a gracious host. I remember in the winter shoveling her snow and she would come out to offer me hot chocolate. She was a beautiful person. She was always so sweet to me and i will miss having her as my neighbor.
