Harry R. Kahler, a resident of Timonium Md. and formerly of Oriskany, NY, passed away on January 14, 2023 in his home at the age of 94. He was born on July 17, 1928 in Utica NY, the son of Nellie M. and Harry T. Kahler. He was pre-deceased in 2019 by his beloved wife of 66 years, Carol Bishop Kahler, formerly of Rome, NY. They had been married for 66 years at that time. Harry leaves behind his daughter, Barbara Delluomo and three sons: Lawrence, Christopher and Steven; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Harry attended both grade school and high school in Oriskany Central School, graduating in June 1946. In high school he was active in sports, playing varsity baseball (4 years) and varsity basketball (2 years). In the Fall of 1946, he entered St. Lawrence University on a scholarship where he completed two years of study. At St. Lawrence, he was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. In 1948 he transferred to Utica College of Syracuse University, again on a scholarship, and graduated in January 1951 with a degree in Mathematics. While at Utica he also earned varsity letters in baseball and basketball. Shortly after graduating from college he was drafted into the Army and served two years, 18 months of which were in Korea during the Korean war. He was discharged in May of 1953 and married Carol Bishop in July of that year.
After his Army discharge, he began employment as a Mathematician at the Air Force Rome Air Development Center in Rome, NY thus starting a career in the aerospace market sector where he worked for approximately the next 50 years, retiring at age 75. Starting as an individual contributor, he progressed over the years to hold senior management positions with several aerospace associated companies. For 15 years he was an officer in, and one of three owners of, RMS Technologies, Inc., a company that provided technical services primarily to NASA, the FAA and the DoD. His career required many moves for the family throughout the U.S. These were always handled very adeptly by Carol, who unfailingly ensured that the family always transitioned promptly and smoothly into the new environment.
His interests were many. The major one being his family, which he cherished, and being with friends. He was especially fond of the holidays (Christmas in particular); history; current events and sports. He took considerable enjoyment in playing amateur and semi-pro baseball and basketball. He did a great deal of this for over 15 years, both during and following college, primarily with teams in the Utica-Rome, NY area. It was while playing baseball for the then Rome State School in 1950 that he first saw his wife to be, Carol, who was a spectator at one of the games. For many years he coached his sons in youth baseball and basketball programs.
In 1971 he was particularly pleased and very appreciative of being selected by Utica College as one of their 10, “All Time Basketball Stars”, for the 25- year period 1946-1971.
The family will receive friends in the LEMMON FUNERAL HOME OF DULANEY VALLEY INC., 10 W. Padonia Road, Timonium, MD 21093 on Thursday, January 19 from 5 to 7pm. A funeral service will be celebrated at the funeral home on Friday, January 20, 2023 at 2pm. Interment Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens.
