IRENE GARDNER DAYTON passed away on October 8, 2018 at Stella Maris Hospice, Timonium, Maryland. Irene was born on December 24, 1924 in Ridgeley, West Virginia to the late Henry and Thelma Gardner. Her family moved to Cumberland, Maryland where she graduated from Allegany High School in 1942. She married in 1945 and she and her husband Richard (Dick) lived in Cumberland, Oakland, Hagerstown, Chestertown, back to Cumberland and settled in Salisbury, Maryland. While raising her children, she worked at 1st National Bank, Peninsula Bank, and later, Wicomico State Roads. In addition to her role as wife and mother, she was active with her sorority - Beta Sigma Phi, and the Order of Eastern Star. In Salisbury, she volunteered at Peninsula Regional Medical Center, was active with Happy Timers, and enjoyed attending and was very active at Trinity United Methodist Church. She was always an avid bridge player with her friends and family. And she loved to cheer on Baltimore Orioles and Ravens, but her true passion was her family. Irene was the beloved wife of the late Richard Keith Dayton of 73 years; loving mother of Charyl L. Dayton and husband Richard T. Webb, Gary R. Dayton and wife Debra, and Kay I. Messersmith and husband D. Scott; cherished grandmother of Brittany Hargest and husband Brent, Michelle Mauzy, Rebecca Gerald and husband Jordan, Nichole Everiss and husband Jesse, Corbett Webb and one great-grandchild Chase Gerald and dear sister June Krimm; and of the late brothers Henry Gardner, Jack Gardner, and sister Virginia (Ginnie) Crabtree.
A private memorial service will be held at the Garrison Forest Veterans Cemetery for immediate family.
