If Love had any other name, it would be Lillie Mae Hatcher… “Cute Lillie” to be exact! Lillie Mae was the eldest of nine children born in North Carolina to the late Nelson and Ollie Mae McMillan. Known for his infectious laugh and raspy voice, Lillie’s father Nelson was a beekeeper; a maker of the sweetest honey. Known for her unwavering faith, scrumptious pound cakes, and potatoes and onions, Lillie’s mother, Ollie Mae was a nurturing, God fearing woman. She took care of her home, children and grandchildren. Her parents were love personified so there is no doubt where Cute Lillie obtained her benevolent heart and self-sacrificing nature. All her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren affectionately called her “Maw Maw.”
Lillie was a devoted member at Isaiah Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school, served on the usher board and sang on the choir. She also loved playing the tambourine. She served many years as a Westinghouse employee where she made many lifetime friends. Hospitality and tender loving care were embedded in Cute Lillie’s character. She was often heard calling someone "Honey" or "Baby" in her deep sweet southern accent that she never seemed to lose. She loved her family unselfishly. From a very young age Lillie Mae loved helping her mother take care of her siblings and the house. She enjoyed cooking and over time became known for her pasta salad and her pound cake! She was very close to all her siblings and called them her best friends. Likewise, she adored her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren and would do any and everything to help them whenever or however she could. Cute Lillie was very frugal and always looked for the best deals. If “pinch a dollar was a person”, then Lillie would also wear that title! When not watching her stories or the Price is Right, Cute Lillie’s charitable spirit allowed her to intercept items like an abandoned hat or clothing items she found lying on the street. She would gladly pick it up, clean it, and redistribute it to someone in the family, at church, or “somebody who can use it.” Similarly, she would always wrap up food at the end of meals, so nothing was ever wasted. She loved nothing more than sitting around talking about the goodness of God over a cup of HOT coffee. The hottest of peppers one could ever imagine were never too much for her! Lillie Mae was indeed a kind human being and loved everyone unselfishly, especially her family. She gave almost everyone around her a nickname of some sort which remains a fun filled memory to cherish of Cute Lillie’s unconditional love.
