On Monday, August 24, 2026, Mary “Sue” Dover passed peacefully surrounded by her family. She was the beloved wife of Avery J. Dover for 55 years; loving mother of Cathleen Batton and Edward Dover; cherished Grammy of Alexandra and Taylor Batton; dear sister of Sandra Hudkins and her late husband Robert, Elaine Nay and her husband Robert, Robert Keith and his wife Marilyn and the late James Keith and his living wife Sandra. Sue is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.
After graduating from the University of Akron in 1970 with a degree in Elementary Education, Sue married her husband Avery, on July 24, 1971, beginning a partnership filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories. She devoted 25 years to teaching elementary school within the Archdiocese of Baltimore, retiring in 2014 after a career marked by compassion, patience, and an unwavering commitment to her students. Sue's excellence as an educator was recognized nationally in 2007 when she was honored as the National Math Teacher of the Year by the Catholic Education Association at its annual convention.
In her younger years, she and her husband looked forward to spending a month in Florida each year for many years and enjoyed several cruises together. As the years passed, Sue found joy in life’s simpler pleasures, sharing coffee and conversation with her teacher friends, taking walks, and getting lost in fiction novels, especially those by James Patterson.
Some of her most treasured moments came during “Grammy Camp,” when she delighted in caring for and making memories with her grandchildren. Her faith was also an important part of her life, and whenever she was able, she shared it with others by teaching CCD at Church of the Nativity. Above all, she will be remembered as a devoted wife, beloved Grammy, dedicated educator, and faithful friend whose kindness touched countless lives.
The family will receive friends at the Lemmon Funeral Home of Dulaney Valley, Inc., 10 W. Padonia Road (at York Road) Timonium, Maryland 21093 on Thursday, September 3, 2026, from 4 to 7PM.
