Matthew Francis Gaffney

Some people leave behind accomplishments. Others leave behind stories. Matt left both.

He was a man whose life was enriched by words. Poetry, literature, and a well-worn book were among his greatest companions. He believed that the written word could comfort, challenge, and inspire, and he found joy in sharing favorite passages and thoughtful conversations with anyone willing to listen.

Nature was another of his greatest loves. He found peace outdoors, especially when watching birds of prey soaring effortlessly overhead. Hawks, eagles, falcons—these magnificent creatures captured his admiration for their strength and grace.

His kitchen was as welcoming as his bookshelf. Friends and family will forever remember his legendary chili, generously seasoned with Old Bay and made with the same care and warmth he brought to everything he loved.

Whether casting a fishing line into quiet waters, savoring a well-crafted IPA—or proudly sharing one he had brewed himself—he found happiness in life's unhurried moments. He believed the best experiences were meant to be shared, and he was happiest in the company of others.

Reflective by nature, he possessed a remarkable ability to listen deeply and speak thoughtfully. Conversations with him could wander from poetry to philosophy, from nature to everyday life, always sprinkled with his impeccable comedic timing. He had a gift for delivering the perfect remark at just the right moment, bringing laughter when it was needed most.

Though his voice is now quiet, his stories, his laughter, and the countless lives he touched will continue to echo in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. His memory remains, like a favorite poem, returning to us when we need it most.

Matt is the beloved father of Jessie Francis Meyrick, Keira Mairead Gaffney, James Fergus Gaffney, Niamh Aine Gaffney, and Nora Rose Gaffney ; son of Joseph John Gaffney, Sr. and Marguerite Teresa Canavan Gaffney; dear brother of Maura Gaffney, Erika Gaffney and her husband Ken Viglucci, Joseph John Gaffney, Jr., and his wife Michelle Gaffney, and Teresa Gaffney; cherished uncle of Cara Viglucci, Kate Gaffney, and Vee Gaffney. Matt is also survived by his former wife Alana Gaffney and her parents Sue and PJ Fitzgerald along with scores of cousins and other loving family and friends.

Relatives and friends are invited to gather at the Lemmon Funeral Home of Dulaney Valley, Inc., 10 W. Padonia Road, Timonium, Maryland 21093, on Saturday August 22,2026 for a Memorial Gathering from 2:00-5:00pm.

Interment will be private.
