Philip was born on November 7, 1916, the son of Italian Immigrants from the Naples Region, who settled in Highlandtown in Baltimore City.
Philip began his working career at the age of 9 selling newspapers along with his 6 sisters and 2 brothers to help support his family. Philip’s father was injured while working on the railroad, and Philip stopped school after the 6th grade to assist his mother who began refurbishing properties to generate income.
Philip met his wife to be, Antoinette, at age 14 and a year later began to court her. At age 16 Philip obtained his driver’s license and began delivering bread for the Bakery, owned by Antoinette’s father and mother, Eduardo and Ausilia.
Philip next found employment at Bethlehem Steel Corporation and quickly learned to operate all of the cranes, tractors and rail equipment there. Over the next 42 years Philip was promoted to Foreman and General Foreman, supervising crane and tractor operations in the mills. Philip’s years at Beth Steel were interrupted during World War II during which Philip served in the Army, rising to the rank of Sergeant assigned to the Office of the Inspector General.
Upon his return from the service Philip married Antoinette in 1946. Philip and Antoinette had a loving marriage that continued until Antoinette’s passing at age 96 in 2014.
An avid reader, Philip was self-educated and consumed the newspaper cover to cover every day up to the time of his final illness last week. He loved to drive cars and motorcycles and, even up till the spring of this year, would occasionally take his Cadillac for a drive in the neighborhood.
Philip is survived by his four children, Nancy Cuomo and her long time friend James Rohrbach, Bernadette Cunningham and her husband Glenn, Dennis Cuomo and his wife JoAnn, and Joseph Cuomo and his wife Susan. Philip is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and many loving nieces, nephews and wonderful friends.
