I have memories of so many wonderful gatherings at Marie and Ralph's house in Timonium as a child growing up.  It was always a hub of love and laughter (and lots of good food!).  When I remember Ralph, the first thing I see is a smile and I can almost hear him laughing, sometimes even a giggle, he was so good natured.  The four of you are amazing, unique and special, he raised a spectacular family!  

May you all find strength and peace in the love of family and the warm embrace of friends.  Our hearts go out to you sending much love.

Dearest Dad,

     I want you to know how wonderful my life has been because of all the things that we did together as a family growing up and throughout our lives. All the wonderful experiences that you provided us bring me many memories of our joyous times together. Truly I think I had the perfect childhood and when I tell others about it, they find it amazing.

     I'll always remember Sundays, especially when we were very young on Joppa Road. That was a time for going to church and then doing something together as a family for the rest of the day. Whatever we did, it was always as a family. We took rides in the country, went on picnics, saw special events in Baltimore and DC, put together big puzzles, played board games and had many outings on the boat, the Wee VI.  And of course, every trip in the car meant singing songs (I've Been Working on the Railroad, The Zulu King, and You Can't Get to Heaven were always favorites). I always loved hearing your voice. You had a very good voice.

     You gave us that adventuresome spirit to travel and explore. I know we used to track all the states that we had been through on our many trips, and I think we saw most of the contiguous 48 states together as well as Mexico and Canada. Vacations were always an adventure. Most of the kids I knew had not travelled to all the interesting places I had been. I remember going to Saint Ann de Dupre in Canada where Mom's problem with her lower back was cured, the chapel in the pines in Vermont, Mt. Washington in July and it was freezing at the top, the seashore in New England, Point Judith, Cape Cod, Newport, New York City when we were young, experiencing all the lights and hustle bustle of the city, he New York World's Fair, Washington D.C. many times and how I loved the parades with the marching bands, Kitty Hawk, camping at Nagshead – and the outdoor shower, Florida at Christmas time and all the fun things we got to see there: flamingos, Sea World, Alligators, and Michael cutting his finger with a butter knife, trips to Chicago and experiencing the hustle bustle of our hometown city, Houghton Lake in Michigan and riding in the back of Uncle Jerry's convertible and singing “Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini”, the Cross Country Family trip to the West Coast – what a trip that was and I can't imagine what it must have cost (the St. Louis Arch – Gateway to the West, camping in Oklahoma next to cowboys, Yellowstone, Yosemite,  the San Diego Zoo, Mexico Rosarito Beach where we rode horses on the beach and had dinner to the music of troubadours, it was echanting,  Disney Land, a flight down into the Grand Canyon).

     Then when we became adults with our own families and you purchased the sail boat and the time shares that kept bringing the family together to travel and create beautiful memories that will last forever. The sailboat took us away from the hustle bustle of life to the peace and tranquility of gliding quietly across the water and feeling the gentle breeze and sometimes the ocean spray across your cheek. The timeshares brought so much fun, trips to Ocean City, and trades for ski lodges at the Von Trapp Family Lodge and to Shawnee and Wisp. I, Jason and Matt learned how to snow ski during those trips. It was such fun. Our love of Williamsburg developed from trips to your timeshare there. Seeing a part of history through the actors and setting at Williamsburg transported you to another time and made you feel like you were actually living it. And, we saw it at almost every season for many years: Easter in the springtime, 4th of July in the summer, Thanksgiving in the fall. How fortunate we all were to take the cruise too for your 50th wedding anniversary. It was my first and only cruise so far, another wonderful memory of us all being together.

     Dad, this only touches on all the wonderful things that you did for us. I am so proud and so lucky that you were my dad. You were a caring, loving father who provided well for his family, set a good example, and raised children who are respectful and care for one another, and created beautiful memories for us that will live on forever. There are many things in life that are important, but to me these are the most important and it means that your life was a success; you lived it fully in every way, and you left a beautiful legacy in your family. 

     Dad this is written from my perspective, but I know it speaks for all of us. We thank you and we will love and honor you always and forever!

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. You will always have the memories and he will always be in your heart. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

One time when Michael and I were fortunate enough to have a visit as adults, Michael said to me, childhood was marked by waiting for Christmas and our family visits. We were truly fortunate to have mothers that loved each other so unconditionally and fathers who bonded and formed such a true friendship that they always brought their families together. Their love gave us so much and joined us to one another, and our relationships and love are extraordinary because of our parents love and relationships.
I remember the excitement of each visit from my point of view, and now from my parents. There was such joy in anticipation, and fun as we beached, picnicked, went sightseeing or just off to bed as children!
To me Uncle Ralph was the warmest, calmest, most patient adult of the group.  He taught daily lessons in a gentle manner and later explained stock market investments in the same way. He looked lovingly upon each of us as we grew up and then lovingly upon our children. His smile was supportive and validating. His merry laugh and mischievous glances brought more fun and laughter to every encounter, and together with beautiful Auntie Mae and my parents there was always plenty of laughter and fun.  Uncle Ralph caught every joke and always quietly tossed one back, and whether we were talking about cameras, boats or investment strategies he had expert advice and explained his thoughts with patience and delight.
Linda, Michael, Marcia and Mary Jean, I have so many more wonderful loving memories of times spent together and of your dad. He will always live on in my memories and his legacy will always be a great part of all of our family's stories. I am so sorry he is gone now, I know the pain of loss is great, and I know you will continue to find consolation in happy memories, wonderful families, and my mother's , your Auntie Laura's belief that Freddy and Ralph are having heavenly times fishing, having a drink and cracking jokes.
I am so grateful for your father's life and all he gave to us. I am so grateful for all of our parents and for you.

What we remember about Ralph was that he was always smiling, happy and very easy going. He enjoyed having fun and being with the important people in his life. He had a wonderful family and his life centered around them. He exuded love,care and appreciation for others and was a blessing to know. After Marie died, he found a new life and made the most of his last years. He was an inspiration of courage and adaption to change. We loved him dearly!

So sorry to hear of Ralph's passing. I had been thinking about him recently and recalling a time when they took us out on their boat. They were great neighbors.

We have very nice memories of Ralph, Marie and their family.  They welcomed us into the neighborhood.  I still have the perennial flowers Marie gave us from her garden, which will remind me of those times.

The Chyrek family played a formative role in my life.  Every one of you contributed to making me a better human being.  Your father and mother treated me like a son while I was a midshipman at the Naval Academy.  And Michael, Linda, Marcia and Mary Jean, you were like my younger siblings.  I spent countless weekends and holidays enjoying the love, merriment, and joy generated by the Chyrek family-Ralph with his infectious smile, beautiful Mae with the welcoming twinkle in her eyes and music in her voice and you energetic and loving kids.
I always felt unconditionally, loved and welcome - even after I wrecked Ralph's motor boat while trying to prove I could steer it to the pier.  We took many memorable family picnics, hikes and of course sailboat cruises during which time I again proved my sailor shortcomings.   I enjoyed Mae's fine cooking, and benefitted from Ralph's sage counsel during my academy years.  They truly were like parents to me.  I felt like a big brother to Michael, Linda, Marcia and Mary Jean.
Your parents taught us all how to live on this earth.  I know they are still providing guidance.  I miss all of you.
