

Robert Russell Kent, M.D. a physician and member of various humanitarian teams domestically and around the world, died Monday of cancer at his home in Lutherville under the care of Gilchrist Home Hospice. The longtime Baltimore resident was 77. Dr. Kent grew up in Washington DC, and lived most of his life in Baltimore. He graduated in 1951 from Woodrow Wilson High School. After attending three years as an undergraduate at Johns Hopkins University he entered the Air Force as a pilot. He and his wife, Joankay were married at Andrews Air Force Base on 5-18-55.
After serving in the Air Force, he attended Johns Hopkins Medical School, completed his internship and a Fellowship in Cardiology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital before moving to Greater Baltimore Medical Center as Chief Resident in Medicine, and established a private practice in internal medicine. At GBMC he also served as one of the first Directors of an Intensive Care Unit.
After his years in private practice, he turned his skills into humanitarian efforts domestically and overseas. As Medical Director, he helped establish the first substance abuse program at Wyman Park Hospital. Later, his interests in AIDS lead him to Chase Brexton as Medical Director. Dr. Kent also volunteered at several other public medical clinics in the Baltimore area.
During his retirement, his calling continued. Dr. Bob, as he came to be known, took many trips overseas in humanitarian efforts. He set up a medical clinic in Iraq in 2003 after the start of the war. He took many trips to Africa, S. America, and Asia sponsored by Medical groups and Churches.
He and his wife enjoyed traveling throughout the United States with their Airstream camper trailer and as well as trips to the Eastern Shore.
Dr. Bob was the loving husband of Joankay Kent; devoted father of Tara Kay McDonough and her husband Harry, and Tami Kathleen Kent-Green and her husband Douglas; grandfather of Janice Kay Stencil, Elizabeth Naomi Staley, Katharine Frances McDonough; great grandfather of Zakary Kent and Ava Elizabeth Staley, Michael Shane and Jeremy Christopher Stencil.
The family will receive friends in the Trinity Assembly of God Church, 2122 West Joppa Road, Lutherville, MD 21093 on Friday, July 22 from 9 to 10 am at which time a funeral service will be celebrate at 10 am. Interment Private. In lieu of flowers contributions may be directed in Dr. Kent’s name to American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 43025 Baltimore, MD 21236.
