

A native of Cambridge, Mass., Mr. Danielson attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a recipient of a Boston area high school scholarship and graduated in 1942 with a Bachelor’s degree in Marine Engineering. He joined Bethlehem Steel Corporation in 1942 as a member of that year's training program for college graduates. His initial assignment was at Bethlehem's former Quincy, Mass. shipyard. After many successful years he was promoted to naval architect in 1961 and chief naval architect in 1962. Mr. Danielson was transferred to Maryland in 1964 when much of Bethlehem Steel’s ship building operation was moved to Sparrows Point. Four years later, he became Chief of Basic Ship Design and in 1971 was appointed to Assistant Manager, Ship Development and Sales. In this role, he acted as a liaison between the New York ship sales office and the Sparrows Point yard. Known affectionately as Danny by his co-workers, Mr. Danielson was a member of The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, and served on American Bureau of Shipping committees and on the U.S. Coast Guard's Chemical Transportation Industry Advisory Committee.
Mr. Danielson was a resident of the Timonium area for almost 50 years. He enjoyed all things outdoors, including walking and hiking on the C&O Canal and the Appalachian Trail. In addition to Doris, his wife of 67 years, he is survived by his three children, Janet Claire Danziger, Robert James and Alan Edwin Danielson; eight grandchildren, Christine and Pamela Danielson, David, Michael, Matthew and Andrew Danziger, Steven and Karen Danielson; and one great granddaughter, Isabelle “Izzy” Danziger.
A memorial service will be celebrated in the Lemmon Funeral Home of Dulaney Valley, Inc., 10 W. Padonia Road (at York Road) Timonium, MD 21093 on Saturday, December 1, 2012 at 1PM. In Lieu of flowers contributions may be directed in Mr. Danielson’s memorial to Stella Maris Hospice, 2300 Dulaney Valley Road Timonium, MD 21093
