On November 13, 2025, Dr. Ronald Gregory Peterson, Sr., a devoted OB-GYN, family man, and lifelong lover of Maryland sports, passed away. Born in Hamilton Square, New Jersey, Ron’s journey took him from his childhood roots to a remarkable life of service, learning, and compassion.
Ron attended Bucknell University for his undergraduate studies before earning his medical degree from Temple University. After Temple Med School, Ron moved to Delaware, where his son Greg was born, and then in Florida, where his daughter Barbie was born. During his time in Florida, Ron served as a Medical Officer in the United States Navy, treating deep-sea divers suffering from decompression sickness—the “Bends.” The family then moved to Baltimore, where Donna was born. This period marked Ron’s early years as a proud Marylander, living in the city not far from Memorial Stadium. He frequented Orioles games and held season tickets to the Colts, becoming a lifelong fan of both teams. Ron could recite Orioles players statistics with ease, and spring training trips to Florida remained one of his greatest joys.
Soon after settling in Baltimore, Ron began what would become more than 50 years of dedicated practice in obstetrics and gynecology. He devoted the entirety of his medical career to Greater Baltimore Medical Center (GBMC), where he was not only a trusted physician but also a respected leader. He served on GBMC’s Board of Directors and, though asked to become Chairman of the OB-GYN Division, he humbly declined to spend more time with the people he valued above all—his family.
Ron’s dedication to women’s health extended far beyond Maryland. His passion for teaching and improving care took him across the world, including to India, Pakistan, and the Philippines, where he trained other physicians in obstetrics and helped strengthen the field he loved.
Ron found peace and purpose in the simple pleasures of life. He loved tending to his yard, spending time in Annapolis, cheering for Navy lacrosse, and traveling the world. He was also very athletic and enjoyed staying active, walking, biking, and especially playing tennis, a sport he cherished throughout his life. A devoted member of Hunts United Methodist Church, he volunteered every Sunday during coffee hour and lovingly cared for the church gardens.
Above all, Ron loved his family with a steady, unwavering devotion. He was famous among those who knew him for his sweet tooth and his insistence that every meal—no matter how ordinary—should be followed by ice cream. It was one of many small ways he brought joy to life and to those around him.
Ron’s legacy is one of kindness, dedication, and quiet strength. His impact on the countless families he cared for, the colleagues he supported, and the loved ones he held dear will live on for generations.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
Ron is the devoted husband of the late Caryl Peterson, the loving father of Ronald Gregory Peterson, Jr. and his wife Tara, Barbara Jean Dawson and her husband James, Donna Lynn Crawford and her husband Gregan. He is also the cherished stepfather of Nanci Lewis Adams and Anne Ensor Smith and her husband Chris. He is the beloved “Peepop” of Natalie Peterson and her husband Michael Stakkeland, Janie Atanackovich and her husband Pavle, Jenna-Lynn McNeill and her husband Keith, Brian Dawson, Sarah Tessier and her husband Brian, Cameron Crawford and his wife Lindsey, Lindsay Marine and her husband Michael, Eli Adams and his wife Lauren, Sydney Adams, and Abigail Smith. He is the proud great-grandfather of Bennett, Michael, Gabriel, Kamal, Kylah-Jo, Khloe, Magnolia, and Wyatt; dear brother of the late Alden Freeman Peterson; and dear uncle of Glenn Peterson.
