William A. Hoyt, Jr.

William A Hoyt, Jr. passed away peacefully on September 2, 2026, following a lengthy struggle with dementia. He was a beloved son, brother, husband, father, uncle, grandfather, great grandfather, coach and friend. He was a loving husband to Jane Peach Hoyt for 67 years, and a devoted father to William, Wendy and Cynthia. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren, Will Hoyt, David and Nick Mersinger, and Elizabeth and James Biondo, as well as 3 great grandchildren, Mykael Crawford and Patton and Callum Mersinger.

Bill was a veteran of the United States Coast Guard, where he served with honor. He worked in many vocations, including being a car salesman, Snap-On Tool Distributor, and a Little Debbie Distributor. The latter was a favorite of his children, who raided the van on numerous occasions looking for Little Debbie Oatmeal Pies. Bill’s last employment, and undoubtedly his favorite, was with the National Security Agency, where he retired from duty in 2003. During his tenure with the NSA, he was able to travel to Sarajevo, an experience that he cherished.

He was an avid sports fan, and he also loved playing sports himself, especially basketball where he was the master of the “one step shot”. He would play for hours at York Manor Swim Club with kids half his age, often whooping up on them on the court. Two hand touch football was also a favorite pastime. Family and friends would gather up at Hampton Elementary school on Sundays to play, and it was always competitive and a great time. Bill loved coaching as well and was involved in many of the different sports his children played. In the latter years, he enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren play in their various chosen sports. Playing cerebral games such as Trivial Pursuit and Scrabble were a staple, and he was a big fan of Jeopardy. He loved playing anything that involved interesting facts and history.

Bill also loved animals. He allowed his kids to have almost any type of creature that they could catch, including small amphibians as well as dogs, cats and a rabbit. After the kids moved away, he and Jane had a few dogs that they loved dearly. For many years, Dad was a weekly volunteer with Pets on Wheels alongside his beloved dogs Pooch and Briscoe. At Keswick, he created lasting friendships with the men he visited. This brought joy to both himself and the residents there.

Bill and Jane spent the last few years of retirement at Pickersgill Retirement Community in Towson, Maryland. There he made many friends, participating in current events discussions, trivia events, the Pickersgill singers, and social gatherings. He was also tasked with winding the clocks there, which was a “job” he enjoyed and undertook with care and enthusiasm. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, as he could always make people laugh. Even in his last few years he brought much joy with his wit and charm, endearing himself to those around him.

A visitation and celebration of life service will be held at 3 pm on September 24, 2026, at Pickersgill Retirement Community. 615 Chestnut Avenue Towson, MD.
