Mary B. Hernandez was a wonderful mother, grand mother and great grandmother. The daughter of Leonardo and Maria Hernandez, Mary was born on March 25th, 1927. She was a strong and loving woman wise beyond her station. Mary's humble beginnings began as a migrant farm worker, harvesting fruits of the earth that fed a nation during WWII. While her brothers served in the armed forces, Mary, her sisters and cousins would work in the fields to provide for the family. After the war, Mary would work in the textile industry in Glendale, AZ. Mary was an entrepreneur starting a business making snow cones (raspadas) in Tolleson. Known for her variety of home-made syrups, lines of people would form outside her modest home. To this day people still rave over her milk (leche) syrup. Her love of animals and gardening was as strong as her daughters, Sandra and Geanne. Mary would grieve the loss of her girls but would hold her pain inside. Mary is now with them both tending the garden and maybe even making a few snow cones. Mary had four children; Sandra Jeanne Moreno, Geraldine Anne Medrano, Paul Dennis Alvarez and Patrick Gregory Alvarez. She loved life, loved her family and loved to laugh!
