Walter was born in Grand Island, Nebraska and raised in Wood River Nebraska. At the age of 2, Walter and his brother Frank became wards of the county and were soon adopted by Elsie and Gary Goesch. He has very fond memories of his adopted mother Elsie. Walter grew up in a Mennonite community and went to a Presbyterian church in town.
Walter joined the military in 1964. He served in the artillery unit and was in the 105th training battalion. He also served in the reserves. From 1972 to 1975 Walter trained as a meat cutter, this experience advanced him to becoming a food inspector for the USDA, a career he began in 1975. He was an inspector of grade 7 cattle, sheep and hogs. Walter started his career in Omaha, and then moved to Texas (met Mr Jimmy Dean!) and then Idaho. He retired in 2000.
Walter met his wife Karen, in 1964 and was married in 1966. He had three children, Susan and William (who live in Avondale) and Steven (who has passed away). It was William who encouraged Walter to move to Arizona to be closer to family in 2011. Walter loved Arizona and enjoyed the SCW retirement community where there were lots of folks to visit with.
Although Walter grew up Presbyterian (he also attended a Methodist church at one time), he was interested in visiting other churches when he moved to Arizona to see what he liked best. He visited the Sun City West congregation (at that time W Bell) and really liked the preaching, the teaching and the Bible knowledge shared and taught. Walter never left the congregation after his first few visits.
Walter enjoyed woodworking (he crafted the Bible stand in the church hallway), furniture repair, model trains and was a fabulous green thumb! One of his greatest past-times was studying the Bible.
Walter passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 5th, 2022.
