A genuine friend, Al will always have a happy spot in my heart. I think it was the Seaside Half Marathon around 1980 that I first met him. After that, I saw him at too many events to mention, with the Freehold Running Club, Shore AC, Jersey Shore Running Club, Lakewood Community events held by Dave Sauls, and mostly with the Ocean Running Club. From the Howell / Freehold area, Al moved to Jackson, we moved to Jackson, Al moved to Pine Beach, we moved nearby in Beachwood. We had lots of fun at Freehold and Ocean Running Club Banquets, picnics, and other events throughout the years, like parties at the Carlsons. As soon as you would see Al anywhere, he would have a friendly smile, and we always had things to talk about. In Jackson, he and I belonged to a group that got together during the day with a Jackson Township High School community fitness group, we walked and we talked. In Pine Beach, many times I rode my bike from Beachwood to his house. We would sit on the porch and talk, like I said, we always had something to talk about; he was very comforting and we had so much in common. Because we moved away from Ocean County, the last time I saw Al, was about 5 years ago at an ORC Banquet; we danced together. My husband Alan and I will truly miss Al Hayden, a buddy, a friend, a running and walking partner; someday, we will meet again.

For a while Al and I had the same car (old white Toyota)- many times we tried to get into the wrong car. Shared many laughs on that one. Al is one of the good guys who has now finished his race.
