With heavy hearts and cherished memories, we announce the peaceful passing of Allan Terhune, Sr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, on May 14, 2026, at his home in Toms River, NJ. Born on September 19, 1953. Allan lived a life marked by love, dedication, and a boundless passion for sailing and sports.
Allan was the cherished son of Richard Terhune and Sophie Kirk, and was predeceased by his dear sister, Katherine Terhune Fullmer. His legacy continues through his devoted wife of nearly five decades, Lauren; his children, Allan Jr. (Catherine Muller-Terhune) and Kristen Troup (Aaron); and his five grandchildren, Cameron, Rory, Emerson, Fletcher, and Brenton.
A proud graduate of Wardlaw Country Day School and Gettysburg College, Allan began his career as a math and science teacher and basketball coach at Toms River Middle School East. He later founded "Gutter Specialists," which evolved into the successful Allan Terhune Company (ATCO), and served as head basketball coach at Admiral Farragut Academy.
Beyond his professional life, Allan was a cornerstone of the sailing community. A lifelong member and former Commodore of both the Barnegat Bay Yacht Racing Association (BBYRA) and Toms River Yacht Club, he was a dedicated competitor in the M Scow, Lightning, E Scow, Flying Scot, and Ensign classes. He famously campaigned his J/29, "Windekind," along the East Coast, earning numerous championships and sharing unforgettable memories with friends and family. He also spent countless hours running races, hosting clinics and promoting the sport he loved so dearly for his fellow sailors.
Allan was a man of character, known for his wisdom, his ability to listen, and his relentless pursuit of a better future. He was a pillar of strength for all who knew him.
A service to honor Allan's remarkable life will be held on May 22, 2026, at 12:00 PM at the Toms River Yacht Club. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Barnegat Bay Yacht Racing Association at https://bbyra.org/donate.
As we celebrate his life, we remember a man whose spirit will forever guide us like the gentle winds of Barnegat Bay.
