He is also survived by his siblings Maureen Hall, Patricia Healey, Robert Healey and James Healey and childhood friend Dr. Gregory Halligan. He was a beloved Poppy to Keira, Patrick, Charlie, Hank, Maeve, Bennett, and Andrew and a dear friend and revered coach to many. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
The son of Mary and Andrew S. “Buck” Healey Jr., Steve was born on February 10, 1948, in Lakewood. He attended St. Joseph’s Grade School and Toms River High School where he played football, basketball and track and field. He went on to study education and play football at Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa. Steve earned his bachelor's degree in physical education, played in the 1969 Mineral Water Bowl and was inducted into the Simpson College Hall of Fame in 1985.
Steve taught physical education and drivers theory and coached multiple sports, including track and field and football, at Henry Hudson Regional High School, Red Bank Regional High School, and Central Regional High School (CRHS). Throughout his decorated coaching career, including 26-years as head track and field coach at CRHS from 1972-2001, his athletes and fellow coaches knew him for his fierce competitiveness, consistent positivity, and frequently-
used sayings. Steve notched 25 winning seasons with a 188-51 record and earned Coach of the Year twice. He was a New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association track official, and he was inducted into the CRHS Hall of Fame in 2002 and the New Jersey State Coaches Association Hall of Fame 2003. The track at CRHS was dedicated in Steve’s name in 2022 and surrounds Joseph J. Boyd Football Field, which is named for his father-in-law.
As a devoted member of the Seaside Heights Beach Patrol, Steve was awarded the Joseph J. Boyd Memorial Award for Outstanding Lifeguard in 1976. In addition, Steve and Jacque owned and operated Seabreeze Boats in Seaside Heights for 42 years. Upon retiring from teaching in 2001, Steve and Jacque focused full time on their businesses, including Cranberry Inlet Marina, which they owned and operated for 23 years. The Seaside Heights establishment grew over the years to include a breakfast restaurant and marine services. Steve and his family are lifelong members of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, and Steve was a member of the Toms River Elks Lodge #1875.
More than anything, Steve was a devoted family man, who loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was always there in times of need to lend a helping hand and provide words of encouragement and guidance. He enjoyed going for a boat ride and sharing laughs over a cold beer. He also loved spending time with family and friends at their condo in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Florida.
Words cannot describe how much Steve will be missed by his loved ones.
