Burt Owen Butterfield passed away unexpectedly on November 8, 2020 at the age of 83 due to complications from his battle with cancer. He faced his diagnosis and treatment with the same fierce determination he did any challenge throughout his lifetime.
Born April 16, 1937 in Danforth, ME to Albert and Elsie Butterfield, Burt would go on to graduate from Mattawamkeag High School (Class of 1955), and embark on a 21 year career in the United States navy, Petty Officer First Class (PO1), serving as an aircraft mechanic, a legacy of service to his country that his sons and grandchildren continue.
While in the service, Burt met his loving wife, Janet Eleanor (nee Gaynor), and they went on to have four beautiful children over the course of their 61 year marriage.
He is survived by his wife Janet, and his children Paula Butterfield, and Joseph (Susan) Butterfield, of Toms River, NJ and Shawn Butterfield of Madison, AL. Burt is predeceased by his parents, sister, Rozilla Bell, and his daughter, Laurie Lecrone. In addition to being a dedicated father, Burt was a proud grandfather to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren Crystal (David) Jacobs, Shannon Reece, Shawn Butterfield Jr., Casey Butterfield Hailey Butterfield, Peyton Hoover, Brayden Wildasin, and Miles Jacobs.
Burt’s friendly face could be seen while working as a security officer for Pathmark in Toms River, before retiring and being able to fully enjoy his passion for camping, where he and Janet formed life-long, treasured friendships. Poor Burt was a fanof the Dallas Cowboys and the Boston Red Sox, something we respected, but never fully understood.
The family encourages donations to the American Cancer Society.
