

Dorothy Sophie Matthews, 90, died November 7. Born and raised in a large Polish family in Brooklyn, NY, family was everything to her. After high school, she went to work at Johnson & Higgins Insurance Co. She met and married Charles P. Matthews of Milton, MA, a graduate of United States Merchant Marine Academy. They were married on May 3, 1953. A naval officer, they resided in Queens, NY where she had her two children. Dot followed her husband to the Naval Base in San Diego, CA, until they returned to Floral Park, NY and then settled in Piscataway, NJ.
A homemaker, she reveled in raising her children. In her later years she returned to the work force, working first in the nursery at Brunswick Edison Bowl and then at the Holiday Inn in South Plainfield, moving to Toms River NJ upon retirement.
Dottie could always be found caring for or driving a neighbor and babysitting her grandchildren. She was a devout communicant of St. Mary of The Lake Catholic Church.
She was predeceased by her mother Mae; brother, Walter; son in law, Charles; and niece, Camille. She is survived by her daughter, Kathleen Weiss; her son, Casey Matthews and his wife, Linda; her much loved seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; her sister in law, niece and much loved extended family.
She always lived life with a sense of joy and hope and that infectious laugh. Heaven truly gained another angel.
Memorial visitation will be on Saturday, November 13, 2021 from 10 am to 12 pm with clergy service at 11:30 am at Horizon Funeral & Cremation Services, 1329 Route 37 W, Toms River, NJ.
Masks are required in the funeral home.
