

Elizabeth G. (Betty) Smith, 99, of Toms River, passed away on Thursday, March 16, 2023. She was born in Palmyra, NJ to parents Frank and Helen (nee Scheer) Grassie on August 25, 1923. She lived in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania before moving to Toms River in 1968.
Elizabeth was a graduate of Palmyra High School in Palmyra New Jersey where she was an active member of the girls softball and basketball teams. During World War II, she was an enthusiastic volunteer at hospitals. After starting a family, Elizabeth returned to school to obtain her certification as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). Elizabeth was dedicated to her family and friends with a remarkable penchant for celebrating birthdays, graduations, marriages, and anniversaries. She was always up for an adventure and enjoyed life to its fullest.
She was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Toms River, Toms River Senior Center, the Senior Womans Club of Beachwood, PCTR Helping Hands Knitting Club, Volunteer at the PCTR House of Hope, and PCTR Bible Study Group.
Elizabeth is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Kenneth B. Smith, in 1989; and daughter Hope Smith, her sister Helen Gills-Lavesour, and her brothers Frank Grassie, William Grassie and Jack Grassie.
Surviving are her sister Jean Malinowski, her children, Edward Smith and his wife Linda, Robert Smith, Keith Smith and his wife Jeanie, Jeffrey Smith, Kim Smith and her Partner James DeBlois, Andrea Reynolds and her husband Hank; grandchildren, Heather Brady and her husband Andy, Derek Smith, Garrett Smith and his wife Rouba; Taylor Smith, Austin Smith, Ethan Smith, Aidan Smith, Delaney Smith, Roman Smith, Nicholas Smith, River Reynolds and Ruth Ann Reynolds; great grandchildren, Haley Lynch, Zachary Lynch, Zachary Brady and Julien Smith.
A Memorial Service to celebrate her remarkable life will be celebrated on Saturday, April 1, 2023, 10:00 AM at the Presbyterian Church of Toms River, 1070 Hooper Avenue, Toms River, NJ 08753 followed by a repass for friends and family.
A Private Graveside Service will be held at the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veteran’s Cemetery in Wrightstown, NJ.
