Eugene C. Carlson

Eugene Charles Carlson (aka: Gene) was born in New Lots, Brooklyn in 1930 to Louis and Nettie Carlson, and grew up in the shadow of the George Washington Bridge in Washington Heights, New York City. He served in the Korean War, was married to Barbara DeAngelis (nee Barbara Meyerowitz) in 1951, and raised three children in central New Jersey. For many years, Mr. Carlson worked in the field of wholesale pharmaceuticals. He married Nancy Cser in 1986, and spent the remaining happy years of his life in Toms River, NJ. 

Mr. Carlson loved tennis, nature, music, travel (especially Japan, Korea, Hawaii, Washington State, and Alaska), and the company of others. He was a gifted storyteller, had an excellent sense of humor, and a good-natured personality that endeared him to all who crossed his path. He had a beautiful singing voice and would often duet with his children and grandchildren, whom he loved dearly, and was adored in return as “Dad,” “Pop,” and “Grandpa.”  

A gifted photographer and woodcarver who acquired the professional nickname, “Mr. Chips,” he affably sold his charming woodcarvings both privately and in local stores, making many friends along the way with the highly customized and affordable products of his creative mind. Mr. Carlson taught woodcarving to senior citizens as a volunteer, and gracefully touched the lives of many. 

Gene is survived by his loving wife, Nancy Carlson; his sister, Michelle Rutman; his children -- Janice Scott and her husband Bob Scott, Ken Carlson and his wife Barbara Lepidus Carlson, and Keith Carlson and his wife Mary Rives; his grandchildren, Sabina Carlson Robillard and her husband Louino Robillard, Adam Carlson and his wife Cathy Heywood Carlson, Caroline Scott Boyd and her husband Brian Boyd, and Rene Rives and his wife Bevin Shagoury; his great-granddaughters, Anacaona and Dayana Robillard; and his extended family.
