Toms River- Gerard (Gerry) Cappella, of Toms River NJ, died peacefully at his home on May 19, 2020. He was 56 years old.
Gerard was predeceased by his father Thomas Cappella. Gerard was the loving husband of Diana, the dear father of Stacey (Mike), Megan (Ricky), and Matthew. And he was the proud Pop-Pop of Luciano and Landon. Also surviving, his mother Shirley Cappella. He was the loyal brother of Cheryl (Dave), Tommy (Monica), Raymond (Kathy), Mary (Joe), Carmela (Brian), Beth (Jay), Barbara (John), and Angela (Eddie). Gerard is also survived by his Mother in law, Joan and his brother in laws and sister in laws Richie and Rosa and Debbie and Danny. Gerard leaves behind many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great- nephews.
Gerard was a 1982 graduate of Spotswood High School. Upon graduating high school, he began to pursue his distinguished career in Law Enforcement in the Borough of Milltown as a part time Police Officer. In December of 1986, Gerard graduated from the Middlesex County Police Academy 46th’s Basic training Class. After completing the police academy, he began his career at the Dunellen Police Department where he proudly served the community for 25 years. Within those 25 years, he rose through the ranks and retired as a Chief of Police in January of 2012.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus #2544, a life member of the Milltown Rescue Squad where he served as a Captain and Past President, PBA Local 146, Middlesex County Chief’s of Police Association, The NewJersey State Police Chiefs Association, Councilmen in the Borough of Milltown, and served on the Milltown Revitalization Committee for over 15 years.
He was currently employed by the New Brunswick Public School System where he has served as the District’s Coordinator of Emergency Planning since August 2012.
Prior to moving to Toms River, Gerard was a life long resident of Milltown. Gerard’s quick whit and unique sense of humor lead to many long lasting friendships in the community. Gerard was an avid boater. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family , taking trips to the boardwalk and spoiling his grandsons’.
